We dined on the patio because indoors can be noisy, and everything was great. The food was excellent as was the service. We love dining outdoors when the weather permits, so the end of December was a treat, and the patio is never noisy. The prices are very reasonable. 39 Rue de Jean remains a gem in downtown Charleston with a unique character all its own!

Loved the food, service was great. Only complaint was the tables were so close together we literally had the coats of the table next to us basically on our laps.

Wine list looks interesting but need to make sure they actually bring the wine you ordered. I had to return a bottle before opening since it had nothing to do with the one listed in the menu.

Loved this place. French onion soup was amazing. My husband enjoyed the rabbit. We sipped on great drinks a dirty martini and a hibiscus tea vodka drink. Our 11 year old enjoys the bread and steak. Was a great visit.

Authentic French cuisine! Absolutely loved the fois gras with toast and lingonberries, the French onion soup, and the mussels lardon. We paired it with an excellent wine. Tres bon!

A friend recommended that we eat here while visiting Charleston for Christmas. We were quite impressed with the place. The food was outstanding! Shout out to our server, Carrigan! She was great at making suggestions and very attentive. Order the lamb porterhouse! You will not be disappointed! Highly recommend this place!

My husband and I dined at Rue de Jean last night, and it was a bit different from what we expected. Upon entering, we quickly realized that the restaurant feels much more tired than the photos suggest. It's more casual than anticipated—closer to a pub atmosphere than a fine dining experience—and the noise level was higher than I’d prefer. That being said, the service was impeccable. Our server was attentive and genuinely enthusiastic about the food, which made the experience much more enjoyable. We started with the French Onion Soup and the Fried Goat Cheese Salad. The salad was a standout. The fried goat cheese was lightly breaded, just the right texture, and paired beautifully with the mixed greens, arugula, and beets. It was fresh and flavorful, a perfect combination. The soup, however, was another story. While it had a nice balance of herbs, it was so overwhelmingly salty that it was inedible— and I love salt. I couldn’t finish it, which was a big letdown. For our main courses, my husband opted for the strip steak with truffle butter and truffle fries, with a side of pepper sauce. He was thrilled with his choice. The steak was cooked to perfection, with the truffle butter and sauce enhancing the flavor without overpowering the meat. The fries were crispy and full of flavor. I was impressed. Unfortunately, my duck didn’t live up to expectations. It was undercooked, and the skin was far from crispy, which made it less enjoyable. Having cooked duck at home many times, I was hoping for a much better result. The herbed rice was also overcooked, which was disappointing. While the jasmine flavor was there, the crunchy texture of the rice made it hard to enjoy. Despite the food being hit or miss, we still had a pleasant time. If we decide to return, I might opt for something simpler, like a burger, to see if that offers a more consistent experience.

Dinner at Rue De Jean has become a little Christmas Eve tradition. We were able to make a reservation easily on OpenTable the week before. We were seated promptly. Our server was absolutely delightful. The restaurant was decorated super cozy and the food never disappoints. We had a great time and plan on doing this again next year.
