From the New York Times: Bad Idea may well be what many seasoned diners thought when they heard there was a wine bar specializing in envelope-pushing Lao food opening inside an East Nashville church. But given the level of cooking here, the name turned out to be a self-aware joke, rather than a self-own. The concept coheres in the hands of the owner, Alex Burch, a seasoned sommelier and first-time restaurateur. He had the good sense to bring on Colby Rasavong as executive chef. He invests the weight of his life experience in food that stretches the boundaries of Southeast Asian cooking to the edge of Appalachia. And the wine list is wise beyond this restaurant’s years, mixing tantalizing obscurities, affordable crowd pleasers and connoisseur selections you’ll rarely find poured by the glass. BRETT ANDERSON

One of my favorite dining experiences in Nashville. We were celebrating our 40th wedding anniversary. They started us off with a complimentary glass of Prosecco to toast the occasion. (Very nice and appreciated). Then we were brought an amuse bouche- which I have to say I couldn't understand the servers description. But it was lovely. We had the focaccia with ricotta and honey. It was excellent. Then we followed with the risotto - which was also excellent. My husband had the sirloin which was well prepared and tender. It came with a side of whipped potatoes. I had the acorn squash which was an unexpected highlight. We looked at the dessert menu but decided we were too full- but the server brought us the pear upside down cake as a celebratory gift- and we loved it. Service was excellent. Our water was attended to. Our drinks were delivered in a timely manner. The atmosphere was quiet- which in Music City is rare and was a welcomed respite to our other dining experiences in the city. Given all this excellence, the dinner was very reasonably priced and a good value. I highly recommend!

The food and service was great! I showed up a little too early (prior to the restaurant opening) and one of the sweet managers allowed me to wait inside because it was ridiculously cold outside. We sat at the chef's counter and the chef sent over multiple extra dishes for us to sample. We chatted with him near the end of our meal about the new menu coming and you could tell he really takes pride in work. Great place!

Really enjoyed the experience once again. Food is excellent and service is friendly/top notch. We took a friend for her first visit and loved it, too. Excellent wine list and we certainly don’t expect it, but this is the type of place that remembers you after you’ve been and that says something about extra effort. Prices are also quite reasonable for the quality. We’ll keep returning!
