The Michelin Guide - "This eatery from Chefs/owners Phillip Frankland Lee and Margarita Kallas-Lee is no ordinary omakase spot. The nigiri are not just supremely finessed but also infused with original touches—like the dab of sweet corn “pudding” and sourdough breadcrumbs that coat slices of hamachi. Even traditional pairings become transcendent with his house-fermented soy sauce. The iconoclastic vibe extends to the beverages, including cocktails, sake, and beer. Despite such originality, this "bar" does indeed adhere strictly to one tradition: a mini counter with seating for just ten to ensure a deeply personalized experience. Your time here is bound to pass in a blissful haze of convivial chatter."

Yopparai is one of my two favorite Japanese restaurants in New York and I’ve been going there about 15 years. Yopparai (which means “a drunk” in Japanese because of its great sake list) is simple, excellent Japanese home cooking. The counter seats are for 2 people and that’s the best way to eat there if it’s just 2. The staff is outstanding and quality is excellent. They always have specials so it never gets old. My favorites are the sashimi sampler where the only use the best fish and great variety, karaage (fried chicken), kanuni (pork belly in dashi broth), tsukune (a chicken meatball patty topped with a raw egg yolk you mix together) and grilled squid! Love this place. Always feel like home!
