Three brothers and a brother-in-law from El Salvador realized their long-held dream of opening a restaurant together in November of last year. Jaime Sorto, his brothers Hugo and Jose Bonilla, and his brother-in-law Jose Zelaya looked for a name that symbolizes their concept of two cultures coming together. They chose La Malinche, the name given to a historical figure who has been at the center of controversy for centuries. The noble Mexican woman was enslaved and given to Hernán Cortés, a Spanish conquistador. She became his interpreter and confidante. Their son was viewed as the first mestizo, a child of mixed blood. Many Mexicans consider La Malinche or Doña Marina to have been a traitor, but today, she is also honored as the symbolic mother of the country’s mixed-race people. At La Malinche, all of the starters, vegetables, meats and seafood are served as Spanish tapas, called botanas in Mexico.

We are stilling talking about it— it was that good from the opening fried calamari to the Tiramisu dessert and everything in between. My guests just texted saying one had just reheated yesterday’s doggie-bagged half of her enormous, perfectly cooked Chef Geoff Angus hamburger. Beef is a rarely self-permitted treat; but, as they said when they allow themselves it has to be at Lia’s from here out. The opening drinks were a martini and a dry white house wine. A diplomat who had lived all over the world, he noted the only place he’d had a martini that good (quality and strong) was in Hong Kong. The house white was not only a bargain but excellent. The beautifully presented seasonal salad entree was crisp, colorful and clearly specially sourced. Wait to you get your first glimpse of the Tiramisu- clearly defined multiple layers and huge. The table became quiet but for intermittent sounds of sheer enjoyment. The service was professional, quick and yet warm and friendly as you’d expect from a neighborhood gem. I actually carefully went over the bill it was so reasonable thinking they have left things out. Not usually this effusive— this review is so good I almost feel I must say I have no financial interest in the enterprise and no one in my family works there. It was that good! Enjoy.

So it’s noisy and crowded. Who cares, the food is just delicious, largely portioned and fairly priced, as are the drinks and wine, all delivered by a serving staff that is professional and caring.
