Inspired by Ernest Hemingway and named for his beloved boat, Pilar is a neighborhood restaurant that has been a mainstay of 14th street for over a decade. Executive Chef Clarissa Aguilar helms the kitchen turning out an eclectic menu inspired by local farms and New American cuisine with a focus on seasonal organic produce. The simple yet inventive dishes change frequently, but that’s part of the adventure! Complementing the cooking is a beverage program including cocktails which also rotate seasonally, ranging in taste and complexity from classics like the perfect Old Fashioned to signature concoctions using house made tonics and elixirs. Spanning two floors, Pilar has a variety of spaces to suit your mood. Our first floor bar offers up a casual, comfortable space to down a few drinks in dimly-lit, vintage-inspired surroundings. A social atmosphere fit for a president. Join us where vibrant cocktail culture meets fun elegance and comfort food at this Dupont Circle neighborhood favorite. It is said that while President Theodore Roosevelt loved to eat, to him the dinner table was less an occasion for fine dining than as a springboard for conversations. In keeping with this, we have created a stunning interior design for Teddy and the Bully Bar that keeps patrons talking. Reflecting Theodore Roosevelt’s love for simple American comfort food, including steaks, oysters, fried chicken and house-made cornbread, our seasonal menus feature a contemporary twist on classic comfort dishes with a focus on quality, local and simplicity. We pay special attention to sourcing from our local producers, representing President Roosevelt’s belief to “Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.” We offer an exciting happy hour, energetic bottomless brunch (Sundays), and a perfect match of social energy and food culture.

The experience was OUTSTANDING! The reception was friendly and efficient, and I had requested a specific area in the restaurant which they met. The appetizers and main courses were phenomenal, our guest from Chicago remarked that the duck main course was the best he’s ever tasted! We (4of us) each ordered different main courses, and we all left our plates clean!!!

We chose to eat at this restaurant because it was close to the Christmas markets that occurs in downtown. Washington DC seasonally. The restaurant is located inside of the Monaco hotel. we read a lot of things online about how great the food was, and it did not disappoint! The salmon, the butternut squash, and the rack of lamb were very impressive, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. The bartender makes a pretty good old-fashioned as well.

We met friends from out of town at True Food, as they were staying at a nearby hotel. We thought we were booking a brunch reservation. Somehow, the reality that brunch is only served on weekends wasn't clear when I made the reservation, so I was a bit disappointed that brunch foods weren't available on a Friday. The food we ordered was tasty, however, & the service was friendly & efficient. The squash pizza was especially good & perfect for splitting. One of the diners was not enthusiastic about his burger (He said it was rather dry...), but we all appreciated being able to sit, eat slowly, & chat eagerly without being rushed by the server.
