While Slanted Door is opening this new location in Napa, it all began with an idea to open a Vietnamese crêpe stand or a noodle shop in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Charles Phan searched for a location but was told that there were already too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area. He moved the search to his own neighborhood: the Mission. He quickly found an available space on Valencia Street. The Slanted Door was born in 1995 with the goal of elevating Vietnamese food to the next level—modern design, sustainable local ingredients, quality teas, and wine pairings. The Slanted Door was quickly recognized and became too small to accommodate the reservation requests. The growing restaurant moved to South of Market in 2002. It was there that the team integrated a craft cocktail program, which was one of the first restaurants in San Francisco to offer craft cocktail menus. The Slanted Door moved again to the San Francisco Ferry Building in 2004.

Chef Hakan is a second-generation baker who learned his craft in his uncle's bakery in Istanbul. His love for baking started out with making pastries and sourdough bread at first. Hit by a pizza obsession later on, similar to Anatolian flatbread, Chef Hakan studied, experimented, and observed various pizza-making methods. He participated in pizza expos, visited pizza restaurants, and tasted different styles of pizza around the world until buying a nice wood-fired pizza oven and creating his own recipe. Then time came for Hakan to open up his restaurant. Previously known as Napa Baking Company is now serving in Napa as Croccante. Chef Hakan offers long-fermented Pan-style Detroit and Chicago thin tavern style pizza. Croccante currently holds an award from 50 top pizza, as one of the 50 top pizzerias in USA in the "excellent" category as well as a nomination by SF Chronicle as One of the Top Pizzerias in the Bay Area.

This was my third time at El Dorado Kitchen and it was as good as the last 2 times, excellent! There were 4 of us and everyone had a delicious meal. The service was also great. I can’t wait for the next time I’m in town to enjoy another meal. By the way, the first 2 times I was there for breakfast which was fantastic and this time was for lunch.

Overall everything was really lovely! The restaurant is in a nice downtown location (we are locals). Plenty of free ways to park and easy to find. I found the seating is comfortable, tho as a 5’10” woman in a booth I felt like a child, the seats did sink me a bit low. Maybe shore that up a bit. :) One note, we were sitting by the door that goes to the restroom on a cold night is quite breezy and cold. The food was AH MAYZING!!!! We had Cesar salad, real dressing and anchovies- the real deal, lamb shank was to die for melted off the bone, carrots not over. Poked, butter melted over, really good!! Also had scallops, with lobster sauce husband loved it!! Desert plentiful in choice, cappuccino was bitter but I asked for heavy cream and that smoothed it out, sometimes it’s just your pallet. The crab appetizers were obviously not fresh rather frozen not tasty, so would pass on those. Couple of things I would note to the restaurant … One thing is aesthetics , I know there’s might not be a budget for flowers. You had a lot of fake big fake flowers around and also on the table. You might want to make the exception and put a nice single (real) rose on the table. It really classes up the joint. Another note to the staff, the bus girl hovered around while I was eating and made me feel like she was watching me eat, and kept asking me if I was done?? (to clear my plate) I wasn’t done. I like to put my knife and fork down, have a conversation drink some wine and then eat again. Also she cleared my husband‘s plate before I was finished eating, which really makes one feel rushed. I’m also European so that is not something we do in the EU it is typically an American thing. So just a thought to allow people at the table to finish their meals before you clear the table :) “Carpe Diem”, will allow people to relax and enjoy fantastic meals with a beautiful single rose in a romantically lit restaurant by the Napa River Xox

Delicious food & great cocktails. Sitting by the fire was perfect got a chilly winter evening. Ordered both types of imperial rolls, the ribs (so good!), mung bean dumplings (good, but probably wouldn’t order again), crab noodles, pork belly in a claypot (so flavorful and unctuous, definitely get a side of steamed rice), and two desserts. The crust on the pear tart was amazing.
