Despite their being busy we were accommodated an hour earlier than our booked time. The food was extremely well prepared and cooked. The waiters were attentive, and helpful with their advice. Overall a very positive experience of German cuisine.

We rang the restaurant to confirm they could accommodate a pram but when we arrived we were only offered a table by the front door and the draft kept coming through so we were freezing. The food and service was good but it was hard to enjoy our £120 lunch when we were soo cold! We would have had much more enjoyable time if we were offered a cosy table at the back.

Have wanted to try this place for some time after the building renovation. The ambience was great with the grand dining space. The food and coffee however were pedestrian. One of the poached eggs in my Eggs Benedict was overcooked, and the Hollandaise sauce too salty. The service was alright but the highlight was the architecture and history of the building.

Nice experience at 11am on a Friday. Staff were attentive and courteous. Very much able to have a conversation across the table with a friend without needing to increase my voice - which was a surprise given the very high ceilings. This was despite the Grand Cafe area being full as it became lunchtime. On this basis, I will definitely return. The menus are very good too now - really strongly Germanic cuisine, matching its name.

The tables were too close together for a formal business lunch, but in mitigation the upstairs was not open in Jan which is where the tables are more suited to business lunching

Very disappointingly, we were advised that the burger could not be served medium/rare. When it did come, it was tepid and the cheese was crispy. All in all, not a good choice.
    German GymnasiumResponded 5 days ago
Dear Cheng, Thank you for your recent visit and for taking the time to leave us your feedback. As we do not mince our beef in house- it would not be safe to serve it medium rare. Food safety is something we take very seriously and there are strict procedures our chefs have to follow. I'm sorry to hear the burger arrived tepid and I just hope that it was addressed on a day. Thank you again and we hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and earn a higher rating. Warm Regards, Jo & GG Team

Good atmosphere and food but had ran out of weiner schnitzel and Hungarian dessert wine at 19:00 on a Sunday.
    German GymnasiumResponded 5 days ago
Dear Joseph, Thank you for your recent visit and for taking the time to leave us your feedback. We prioritise quality and chefs are very good at anticipating the sales, however some times some items are just way more popular than usual and we run out. Having said that- it is extremely rare that we would run out of the Schnitzel of any kind. I am very sorry it happened on your last visit. I hope you found something else on the menu you liked and we hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future. Warm regards, Jo & GG Team

Yet another lovely experience at the German Gymnasium. Food and drink was excellent. Service was perfect. Only slight gripe was I’d asked for our table and guests to be put in a booth away from the main door to avoid a draft. This didn’t happen and the location we were sat in was a little bit on the cold side. Sometimes you cannot expect everything 100%. Still giving top scores because everything else was still brilliant.
