Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

We shared a first course of roasted Delta asparagus with shaved parmesan. I had a wonderful Alaskan halibut with a lemon caper sauce and French fries and my boyfriend had a good New York steak with fries. We shared a slice of cheesecake for dessert. So glad we were there to celebrate their 46th anniversary. Our server, Veer, was thoughtful and very attentive. It was a memorable experience.

Freshest seafood and veggies. I had tasty squid with butter beans and arugula, steelhead as entree, and creme brulee. All were perfect.

Our dinner was so wonderful. The staff is like family to a person and the dinner was divine. They had us off to the Sumphony without us ever feeling rushed. Absolutely perfect!

Hayes Street Grill has been my "go-to" restaurant in the Civic Center area for years. The service is professional and attentive, the atmosphere is old school San Francisco, and the food is over the top excellent! I had the salmon, cooked to perfection. We shared the brussel sprouts- also wonderful. I believe that one can always tell the quality of a restaurant by its creme brulee. And, Hayes Street has THE BEST I've ever had. Don't bypass this wonderful dessert!

The food is always great, fresh and exactly what you want to eat. In my case the super fresh asparagus, warm and lemony with fabulous olive oil and Parmesan cheese. The oysters and French fries superb! The service was efficient and friendly as always.

Fish and salads were excellent. The vegetable and desert selection was OK, but not as good as they previously offered. Overall, rather expensive.
