   I had a transcendental experience at Izanami this evening, and it was my first time (hopefully not the last!) -like stumbling into the bathhouse from Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited away, except I remained human by the end of dinner, just barely. I joke, but the staff were remarkably friendly and attentive to this solo traveler with a shabby haircut, scruffy beard and scuffed shoes. I had to let the barkeep and manager, and chefs know that they were participating in something divine- they smiled in thanks - they already know! What a joy to be in a place filled with people ignited with their purpose! To join in their rhythm of lovingly crafted sashimi, rich Miyazaki Wagyu which I cooked myself on a blisteringly hot stone, and THE best karaage (fried chicken) I’ve ever had in my life- this was an absolute treasure and I will remember this when I die. (Hopefully as an old man!) Find a video of my experience on the Adventure Sena YouTube channel in a week or so from this review- and remember, life is an adventure!    Our experience was as always, fabulous. Great food wonderful atmosphere. Very attentive staff. And we each enjoyed the food that we ordered for Restaurant week. 😋

   This was our worst experience at Izanami. We are locals born and raised in Santa Fe. Never did anyone ask if we were doing okay. We were a party of 7 for our daughter’s birthday. Service was so slow. Half way through our meal our server asked if we wanted dessert when our A5 steak hadn’t even been served to 5 of us. Unacceptable!!! Do better!! Not everyone can afford a lunch for almost $1000. No excuse. Do better!!!

   Overall it was very overpriced for the quality you would expect from other reviews. We had the grilled avocado which was not so much, and the cucumber avocado salad which had no avocado. The pork short ribs are okay, but definitely not worth the drive and the price. They did have heated toilet seats with a bidet, and that was definitely a redeeming quality.

   We went for a late lunch during restaurant week and it was good, but not great. Our first course (sesame noodles) and desserts were great. The main courses were pretty average, with a long wait to get them. The burger was overcooked (ordered medium rare and received medium well+). I didn't send it back because it took a long time to get it the first time. My wife's main, the tuna rice bowl, was pretty average. We've been to Izanami many times and it's usually excellent, but restaurant week seemed to have it a bit overwhelmed.

    Last year we had an exceptional experience and decided to visit again during our annual trip to Santa Fe. The blankets offered to diners in the outdoor space are a great touch. We were unfortunately disappointed, however, in our service experience. We opted for the Restaurant Week menu and gave the waiter our choices. He apparently didn't capture the dessert information when we first ordered. We then asked for the bill and gave him our credit cards (we evenly split the bill) and reminded him that we had a spa treatment we needed to leave for in 15 minutes. He finally brought the bill to us 10 minutes later and said the dessert would be yet another 10 minutes as he had initially forgot to put in that part of the order. That didn't make any sense to us and we told him to just cancel the dessert as we really had to leave. He was not very understanding even though we had told him our limitation for time. The Restaurant Week menu was a fixed course price, which included the dessert. We were not able to have the whole experience due to his lack of service. It didn't seem to make a difference to him and that was even more disappointing than needing to leave without a portion of our meal.
