La Brasa is a Neighborhood Steak House and Grill, located on Broadway in East Somerville adjacent to its sister restaurant Fat Hen featuring Italian favorites. Featured in the Boston Eater Top 38 Essential Restaurants in Boston, Fall 2024!

Chef Daniel Bojorquez has created a menu which has culinary influences rooted in the same countries as many of the residents of East Somerville, Cambridge, and Boston area. Favorites like grilled steaks, oysters, wood roasted chicken, and of course tacos!

The food was very well prepared and tasty. The timing of the dishes provided was not optimal as sides were provided way before the entrées were. Our server did not ask how we wanted our dishes timed either. Desserts came at different times as opposed to at once. Our bill was also an issue, not divided equally and so the bill had to be run again. Maybe due to new service and some growing pains, but dishes were very well done.

The menu said gem lettuce, which is now in vogue, but it was romaine, and poorly dressed. The lamb belly was three-quarters pure fat, not the appropriate ratio. The waiter disappeared for nearly 20 minutes when we were eager to order dessert. But overall the vibe was spirited and the menu creative. It needs some sanding on its rough edges to be a better experience.

We returned to LaBrasa after many years away and hoped to relive the excellence we experienced before. To no avail. With the exception of a friendly greeting from Thomas we were underwhelmed and under-served the whole time. After ordering drinks, we were served a substitution for the wine requested without explanation or apology. Then things continued to decline. Our waiter acted entitled and aloof while failing to engage in genuine conversation at any time. He did not make eye contact with his guests at any time throughout the service. The bread we were served was neither fresh nor appetizing. It smelled like charcoal briquettes and petroleum fuel. The service was neither attentive nor helpful. Two of the four dishes we ordered were reminiscent of microwave heating with hot spots and bland flavor. As food was delivered it was not described but rather hastily placed on our table and forgotten. We had to wait an inordinate amount of time for service and left feeling neglected and unsatisfied. Like all good things, it seems La Brasa has run its course and has been left to die.
