While Slanted Door is opening this new location in Napa, it all began with an idea to open a Vietnamese crêpe stand or a noodle shop in the Tenderloin neighborhood. Charles Phan searched for a location but was told that there were already too many Vietnamese restaurants in the area. He moved the search to his own neighborhood: the Mission. He quickly found an available space on Valencia Street.The Slanted Door was born in 1995 with the goal of elevating Vietnamese food to the next level—modern design, sustainable local ingredients, quality teas, and wine pairings. The Slanted Door was quickly recognized and became too small to accommodate the reservation requests. The growing restaurant moved to South of Market in 2002. It was there that the team integrated a craft cocktail program, which was one of the first restaurants in San Francisco to offer craft cocktail menus. The Slanted Door moved again to the San Francisco Ferry Building in 2004.

Napa Valley Bistro was opened in 2013 by chefs Bernardo Ayala and Ernesto Martinez, (also co-owner of Market in St. Helena). Their friendship and working relationship, which has lasted over 20 years was so successful, they decided to pool their resources and stake a claim in downtown Napa's expanding culinary scene. Their aim was to create their own version of classic world cuisine in a comfortable space where family and community could gather for any occasion. The twist is evident in the menus, which sample fare from around the globe. Chef Hakan is a second-generation baker who learned his craft in his uncle's bakery in Istanbul. His love for baking started out with making pastries and sourdough bread at first. Hit by a pizza obsession later on, similar to Anatolian flatbread, Chef Hakan studied, experimented, and observed various pizza-making methods. He participated in pizza expos, visited pizza restaurants, and tasted different styles of pizza around the world until buying a nice wood-fired pizza oven and creating his own recipe.Then time came for Hakan to open up his restaurant.     Another fabulous experience at Coles. Scratch that.. it was damn near perfect. No details overlooked this evening. Brian did a fantastic job taking care of us as we celebrated our son’s 22nd birthday. Crazy to think we have been going to Coles since before he was born!

    Delicious grilled salmon on top of spinach on top of polenta! Crème brûlée not to be missed! We shared the wonderful Napa cabbage salad—they don’t skimp on the bleu cheese in this one and there was plenty of salad . Loved the cheery Christmas music for lunch with my dearest friend. I had some bubbly and she had Sauvignon Blanc. The service and atmosphere was warm and friendly as it always is. I drove from Sonoma to Napa because this is one of my favorite restaurants in wine country.

    Bar Lucia has become one our favorites in Napa! A must stop for lunch or a break in the afternoon! The food is excellent; this time we enjoyed the roast chicken sandwich and the bacon avocado panini. So good! The wine choices are above average; there are some boutique winery options along with some of the upper end names too. And the froze’? Yes please!! But one of the best things about Bar Lucia is Lauren behind the counter!! She knows everyone, and a lot of locals stop by which is the best recommendation for a place in the midst of a tourist destination!
