Taverns have had a constant important presence in American life since the late 1600's. Many of them, which were attached to inns, were opened as resting places for travelers needing a place to stop, relax and fortify themselves. Of course the local residents frequented the taverns too, purchasing drinks and meals as well as participating in lively conversations. Taverns were the focal point for neighbors to come together, exchange news, talk of politics, and share in the general feeling of conviviality. Taverns were firmly established as gathering places for the light hearted socializing, serious talk, and of course, a
hearty meal accompanied by a tasty libation or two.

Restaurant is beautiful historic setting with wood burning stove. We ordered calamari which had only a spoon of tomato sauce, a 6oz piece of strip steak comes with wedge of lemon and was cold. Lemon? Why? Why$55. Tasted great. The duck was a small leg quarter for $35. Tasted good. A 6oz glass of chianti is $27. Asparagus was $18. Tasted great. Every single thing is ala carte. Creme brulee is cold $20. 1 oz of commercial limoncello $20. All for $250 total. Rushed out appetizers and entrees come out all at once. Annoying.

I booked this restaurant for my husband’s birthday because I was told it was one of the best steakhouses in Providence. Earlier in the day, I called the restaurant directly to make sure they had noted it was his birthday. They told me it was all set & had been noted. However, when we were seated at our table, there was a sealed letter that said “Happy Anniversary”! We told our waitress & she was aware because another party (whose anniversary it was)was at that table & left before eating. Our waitress said she’d bring a HB letter, she never did. Our food was good, definitely not great. Also, we were seated in a corner by a window which was very chilly. They had a space heater which didn’t help much. One of the apps we ordered was oysters on the half shell & when we asked the waitress about where they were from due to the concern of a recent outbreak of oysters with Norovirus. She answered with a bit of an attitude & stated she had not heard of such an outbreak. They were also out of the venison and it was only 7:30. Ultimately what was supposed to be a celebration of a wonderful man’s birthday turned into something of a disappointment. After this experience I am not sure I would be willing to try Mill’s Tavern again.

Mill's Tavern outdid itself on Christmas eve. Every entree, appetizer, and desert was outstanding. We had a wonderful time. The service was exceptional on a busy night.

Mills Tavern is always a nice evening out. The service is always impeccable and John was no exception. The food is beyond delicious. Definitely one of our favorite places to dine.

Nice ambiance and most of the food was good. The service was below average and with a party of 8 they automatically added a 20% gratuity which made me feel like they knew they were getting 20% and focused on other tables. They routinely digit drinks. Service items and rarely checked in on us. We were the ones who had to flag them down for additional drinks or missing items. Very disappointing.
