About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals
  • Charming
A culinary island in Southern Utah, the Painted Pony brings a touch of class--and intriguing flavors--to St. George. The restaurant, tucked away in Ancestor Square, is exceptionally clean and cozy, with contemporary art, fresh flowers, and -- in the evening -- a top notch romantic atmosphere with subdued lighting and patio dining.

If your surroundings don't clue you in, your first glance at the menu will. Painted Pony is not your standard fare. Contemporary American cuisine evidently doesn't mean just another good steakhouse, and the simply written food descriptions promise something new and intriguing for your palate.

The Painted Pony has perfected the fine art of using fresh ingredients and delicate flavoring. An exceptional wine list, generous portions, attentive service, and reasonable prices will convince you to return to "the Pony" anytime you're in St. George.

My ribeye ($53) was very tough and had a lot of gristle. Very disappointing. My wife’s lamb shank was not juicy. We regret eating there and will not return.

Nice place with a great dining room. We couldn’t get an inside table so opted for the patio which was very comfortable. Started with complementary bread with olive oil and balsamic vinegar- very tasty. Ordered the bacon wrapped dates which were good. Then we shared the Beet Salad (pictured) and it was amazing. Lots of different flavors going on with many different beet preparations, including the dollops of puréed beets that left us wanting more. My wife enjoyed the prosciutto wrapped chicken with the peas and risotto (also pictured). My Grilled Tenderloin Steak was the only disappointment: ordered medium-rare and it arrived well done. Once we got the attention of our server Kyle he had it remade, which took a lot longer than I had expected, and unfortunately it was also overcooked but not as much. I ate the center pieces that slightly pink and left the rest. A Floor Manager named Cindy came by our table to check on us since we had to send something back to the kitchen, which in my experience is the mark of a classy place. We just shrugged and acknowledged that it happens. She appreciated our understanding. Server asked if we wanted dessert and we agreed to look at the menu. However, we didn’t find anything exciting so we just asked for the bill. Great atmosphere and vibe and we would try it again.

Painted Pony never disappoints and we look forward to dining there each time we're in St. George. Cyndy was a fantastic server...very professional and attentive. Food was delicious. Loved the brussels sprouts and bacon wrapped dates as starters. Pork chop is always a favorite and the scallops with gnocchi were cooked perfectly. Make sure to save room for molten lava cake with espresso gelato. Such an incredible meal and service. Thank you!

Wonderful get-together with old friends! Sandy was outstanding in her duties as both bartender and server - so friendly!! The food was absolutely delicious and so beautifully presented. We had a great time, and we'll be back next week with another group of friends. Painted Pony is our favorite SG restaurant.

We were celebrating a birthday, booked well in advance. We arrived on time and were seated promptly. Our server was slow to arrive, we suppose she had several tables, but it seemed fairly quiet when we got there. She took our order 25 minutes after arrival and informed us it would be about 25 minutes for the meal to arrive. We ordered simply--two of us have very small appetites, so we shared the beef tenderloin plate and the birthday celebrant had their own tenderloin. We ordered both steaks medium rare plus. They both arrived cooked to a full medium well. The meat was just ok, not especially flavorful, but then tenderloin isn't so the sauce made up for it, but they just weren't that tender! Potatoes were pretty good, snap peas were tough. After almost two hours, the server brought a "complimentary" dish of vanilla ice cream, and we had to ask for the check. Overall, very disappointing for the price and prior reviews.
