Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
1931 offers a delightful art deco atmosphere, "wonderful service," and "amazing" live music, making it an ideal spot for cocktails and jazz. While some buffet presentations need improvement, the "Reuben sandwich was excellent," and "French Onion soup" stands out. The restaurant is perfect for special occasions, despite some inconsistencies in food and service.

Years ago we would do our Mother’s Day Brunch there when it was Orchid @ Palm Court. Thought it would be nice to go again the Sunday after “M.D.” so it would be less crowded and more economical for us. Knew the name had changed but still expected same caliber of food offerings as in the past. Boy were we disappointed! The restaurant and seating area has been moved to a lower level, which was less than half the size of the original space. There was no omelette station or waffle area. Just semi-warm pre made pancakes. Limited variety of pastries, etc. Cheese, salad and salmon offerings were sitting out at room temperature, no ice underneath to keep them chilled. A definite no no. So glad we didn’t spend the $89/person. Actually there was another gentleman there who was walking around looking at the offerings and stated “this is nothing like what they used to have”. Our other issue was that the plates were dirty. We went through 5 or 6 plates, passing them off to Jayden, at the carving station. I will note that Jayden was the bright spot in our visit. Extremely helpful, friendly/polite and knowledgeable about the restaurant. He’s a keeper!! This was our 1st and last time dining at 1931.

Appetizers were great. Our steaks were undercooked and had no flavor. Drinks were good, but very expensive ($23 for the house old fashioned. Server was wonderful, very attentive, funny, just overall great. Would return for appetizers but that’s about it.

Lunch cost us $83. A bit pricey. The chairs could use updating with reupholstering. There were cracks in the material and tape on a couple spots. The Reuben sandwich was excellent. The French Onion soup tasted great but was only warm, not baked as long as it could have been and very few onions, mostly broth. Service was good. Our waitress was very nice and attentive. Refilled drinks without asking. Atmosphere was great. Beautiful decor. Very convenient if you're staying at the hotel.

I've been to 1931 for evening cocktails/jazz, and it's always been a very nice experience. The moodier ambiance is perfect for this kind of scene, and there's an old-school element that's actually a little hard to find in the city. But this latest trip was for Mother's Day brunch, and sadly disappointing for a place I remembered brunching for Mother's Day even as a kid. Our reservation was for 3pm, towards the later end of the event. While I had the smallest of concerns that there could be some risk with a later reservation, I fully expected that a $90/person buffet at a high-end hotel would certainly do their best to make afternoon parties feel just as special as the morning crowd. What we got, however, definitely did not meet that expectation. I will say that the manned stations (omelets/carved meats) did have a fresher feel to them (bare minimum expectation??), but the hot buffet items were a graveyard of overly scraped tins, messy/splattered surroundings that hadn't seen any clean-up or love since the early morning, stations that clearly had the same food items sitting around for hours (the mussels were highly suspect), and others that never saw a return of sought-after delicacies (gasp: no more oysters?). Even without these bigger flaws, the buffet options were simply...uninspired. While the staff were incredibly friendly, professional, and went above and beyond in their service, it was obvious that they were climbing uphill in a service that was obviously going in the opposite direction. All in all, I have to say I would never go back for brunch, or probably any special/holiday event. We were so looking forward to this day, but to spend almost $500 on a meal for two adults/two seniors that resembled the final vestiges of a large charcuterie board (plus one crazy expensive cocktail) felt like highway robbery and was a sobering end to the day. If you happen to be downtown and are in the mood for jazz and a nightcap, it's a solid spot.

Had high hopes for the Sunday brunch on Mothers Day. The space is beautified. The food tasted pretty good. The service was great. The buffet was really poorly managed—messy presentations, many looking highly picked over and in desperate need to be refreshed. Even the serving tongs and tablecloths were sloppy and caked with food instead of cleaned up throughout.

The service was great, the food was amazing, the ambience was wonderful. The only downfall were the alcoholic drinks. $23 was way too pricey for one of the featured drinks that we ordered when it had an ice cube in it that was as big as the inside of the glass & not much drink left, and the Bloody Mary was NOT good at all to the point that it gave me horrible heartburn.

Service was wonderful. The restaurant decor is amazing. The live music is a nice touch. It would be nice to have more breakfast protein options - chicken/turkey/vegan sausage, turkey bacon, and/or vegan chorizo. A signature 1931 dish would also be of note to offer in addition to hotel event buffet fare.
