About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for creative cocktails
Abacá is an airy, atelier-style restaurant with a cool outdoor terrace, whipping up Filipino-Californian cuisine with flair in Fisherman's Wharf. It's the bricks-and-mortar spin off of chef Francis Ang's pop-up Pinoy Heritage. The lively menu is split up into barbecue sticks, noodles and rice, and small to big plates, but its far more nuanced than just that. Flavourful dishes pull from family recipes and are glazed with modern and heritage technique to result in a vibrancy that's hard to come by. It's grounded by local produce. Smoked Bay scallops lead in the seafood pancit, heirloom tomatoes top homemade tinapay bread, chicken skin is glazed in an adobe before hitting the grill and guinea fowl comes slathered with peanut sauce. A truncated list of creative Southeast Asian libations bring it full circle – if you're on the terrace, cool off with the Baguio breeze slushy – a dreamy mix of pandan-infused vodka, coconut and strawberry.

We liked our dinner at Abaca. The cold dishes were fantastic. When it came to warm plates the flavor wasn’t quite there. Amazing service, just slightly slower than we would wish. But, of course, they were very busy and fully booked.

Everything was excellent! I was pleasantly surprised by the food: from the presentation, experience and tasting! Such a beautiful homage to Filipino Cuisine! Definitely elevated with interesting twists on classics! The service all around was excellent: knowledgeable, attentive and friendly! This place warrants another visit!

My family and I celebrated Mother’s Day at Abaca and was thoroughly impressed. The service and food were outstanding. It’s difficult to find good Filipino food in the Bay Area, and so this definitely takes the cake. We will be back!

Unfortunately, Abaca did not live up to expectations and the high price tag. We went with the Chef's tasting menu. While the food and flavors were good, it wasn't spectacular by any means. The mandatory 20% gratuity and 5% added healthcare charge also didn't line up with the service which was subpar. The overall experience (food, service, ambiance) did not line up with the price tag or the expectations. Unfortunately, this was a miss.
