About this restaurant

  • Hot spot
  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
Akahoshi Ramen is a humble ramen shop in the city of Chicago. Everything is made in the restaurant, including all soups, seasonings, toppings, and noodles.

We are not an authentic ramen shop, though we value the history of ramen, and our ramen is influenced by its past and its future potential. The dish, popularized in Japan after World War 2, is symbolic of both struggle and perseverance. It is both a simple dish, and a fantastically complex one that we treat with reverence and respect.

Roughly translating to “Red Star,” the name “Akahoshi” is a love letter to two cities; Sapporo, Hokkaido, where red stars adorn city monuments, and Chicago, Illinois, where the red star decorates the city flag. Our ramen is influenced by Japanese and American ideals in cooking.

We hope you will join us to enjoy a bowl of ramen, made with the respect and passion it deserves.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: One of Bon Appétit's 2024 best new restaurants in America, this Logan Square spot is the brainchild of Mike Satinover, better known as "Ramen Lord" to the fan base he built up over a decade posting about ramen on Reddit. Get comfortable at one of the spacious booths, or watch the action at the counter overlooking the kitchen, and choose from four different ramens like the Akahoshi Miso, with pork chashu and bamboo shoots. Each bowl is made with incredible attention to detail, showcasing just how nuanced ramen can be.

Amazing food! A personal experience with a great head chef and crew. His reputation is well deserved. I’d give it 5 stars across the board, but I had to go 4 stars for value (I’d probably go 4.5 if I could) due to the 12 oz Japanese beer being 12 bucks and the ajitama being extra. Would definitely come back again.

From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted with the friendly and attentive service. The ramen is absolutely next level. We go every month just to try their monthly special and it never disappoints, already looking forward to our next bowl. Akahoshi Ramen is a must-visit!

Last night was a great experience. Akahoshi is my favorite ramen shop in the city if not the Chicago area. The staff are super friendly and the ramen is so delicious. The noodles are like heaven. It was also very exciting to have met the chef last night! I highly recommend this place as it’s my favorite place for ramen.

We looked this cozy place although the menu is limited. The dishes were tasty and comforting with the hot broths. Lived the rice bowl with pork on top. Yum! Enjoyed being able to hear conversations easily.

The best ramen spot in the city, you won't get better ramen than this. Incredible each and every single time, been following the head chef since his early days of making ramen, he just keeps getting better! Incredible team and an awesome flow, the BEST!

It was a simple meal: the akahoshi miso ramen with an egg. Every detail was executed to perfection: the balance between the umami of the miso and the richness of the broth—it was neither too salty nor too cloying, the charshu was well charred and was melt-in-your-mouth tender, the smoky flavor of the bean sprouts was an unexpected surprise, and the sapporo style noodles and the menma had the right bite from start to finish. The egg was so memorable—in today’s economy, the ramen egg is a luxury item that has been realized to its full potential. The yolk was silky and jammy, and well seasoned. It should be a compulsory add-on. My only wish is that they consider topping some corn and butter to the ramen, just like how some places do it in Sapporo. But I’m already so happy about this meal, and I dare say that it’s the best ramen I’ve had in both the midwest and the west coast, and is just as memorable as some of the best ramen I’ve had in Japan. I will return!

My gf got thee signature restaurant miso ramen, and the meat was cold at the center. It came out a bit too salty. Couldn’t finish the broth. The May special was a hit for me: Kitakata Chashu-men. The Chashu Rice Bowl was small and simple. The rice can use more flavoring. The protein portion was small. The service was very quick, maybe too quick to warm up the meat before serving. lol….
