About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Lively
  • Great for creative cocktails
alaMar is a Contemporary Dominican Kitchen located in the hip Uptown Oakland area. Bravo TV's Top Chef Season 18 Contestant, Chef Nelson German, dives deep into his Dominican culture at alaMar by offering a regional menu of foods he grew up on that his mom, grandmother, and Aunt Maritza would cook and NYC-style Dominican street foods he enjoyed as a child. German brings a unique take to family recipes with his contemporary NYC twist on traditional dishes, including his popular braised oxtail dish. There is indoor seating and a dog-friendly patio with heaters for al fresco dining. The not-to-be-missed craft cocktail program reflects Caribbean influences such as the signature Mamajuana cocktail.

Moderately attentive wait staff and overall decent food, albeit slightly overpriced. Visited with my son at 5:15PM. We arrived about 30 minutes before the rush. We were greeted right away by a polite young lady. She began to seat us, but then another couple arrived and she left us to seat them—it was an odd exchange that left us awkwardly standing outside, selecting our own table. We had the FRITURA SALCHICHON LONGANIZA appetizer, which was brought out very quickly and was very good. My son had the CAMARONES CRIOLLA, which he described as “meh” when asked. I tried them, and they were well cooked, but generally poorly seasoned. I had the BRAISED ANGUS OXTAIL “ENCENDIDO”, which was very good, although for a “large” entree, I was a bit let down, as it was rather modest. Nonetheless, the flavor packed a punch. My son had guava-infused limeade which was legit. I had unsweetened tea. Overall, worth the visit but not something I would personally go out of my way to have again.

The staff was friendly and attentive as we were attending their 11th anniversary celebration and our group was performing as entertainment plus my friends and I hadn’t gone out together since last year so it was fun and festive. The food we shared was delicious

We came for lunch. The food was so good and the service was on point. I had the mofongo with shrimp and it was very tasty. It’s a generous amount of food for a very reasonable price. It’s hard to find Caribbean food this good in NorCal. I’ll definitely be coming back.

The ribs, an appetizer, were fantastic. I got the pork dish, and my friend got the chicken. The pork was pretty tasty, but I think the chicken was the standout. I would definitely go back for the ribs and chicken, and I'm keen to try more of the menu!
