About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Fancy
  • Good for business meals
Asador Bastian is a Chicago chophouse with Basque influences from acclaimed Chef
Doug Psaltis. Located in the iconic “Flair House” originally built in 1883, this historic
townhouse has been revived and brought back to life with culinary inspiration from the
great asadors of San Sebastián, Spain to serve the world’s best boutique beef without
compromise. The most remarkable dining experience comes from the purest ingredients
delivered in the supremely thoughtful, welcoming and hospitable manner. This ethos
has directed every aspect of the experience at Asador Bastian, whether you’re joining
us for small bites and libations in our Bar Room or for a more intimate experience in our
Dining Room.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: In a historic River North townhouse, you’ll find Asador Bastion, named one of 2023’s best new restaurants by Esquire. Acclaimed wife-and-husband team Hsing Chen and Doug Psaltis lead the kitchen, which turns out Basque-inspired feasts starring impressive steaks cooked over a live-fire grill alongside caviar churros and arroz cremoso. It’s all served in an opulent dining room decked with olive green leather banquettes and vintage Murano glass chandeliers.

Not worth the hype or price. The roasted artichokes and Bone Marrow Mashed were the highlights. The tuna carpaccio and crab risotto were nothing memorable and actually a bit bland. The steak was heavy with tough connective tissue, lacked any really flavor, and not worth the price. With all that Chicago has to offer and the price, Asador does not live up to all the hype and is certainly not a value for the very expensive price.

We had a phenomenal dining experience. Evan was a great host and server and his knowledge of the menu was comprehensive. The wine selection excellent, the beef , sides and starters were all top notch. Asador Bastian is 1 of 1 in my book.

Great seafood. Excellent guidance from server and sommelier. But: they mistakenly threw away both of our carefully hoarded entree leftovers we had restrained ourselves from finishing, and the fish cannot be replaced since they serve the whole fish. Would come back but insist they bring leftovers to table, not the front desk.

Ambience felt upper scale but was a bit noisy and the decor inside wasn't as impressive as we'd imagine. The service was very good. We ordered the potato puree w/ bone marrow, hongos y huevo, galicia steak, and crab arroz. For dessert, we were gifted the basque cheesecake as we were celebrating a birthday. Just about everything was delicious, and the highlight for me was definitely the crab arroz - super delicious. The only item we had an issue with was the steak. It had great flavor and was well seasoned, but it was almost inedible as it was very chewy (think chewing 40 times per small bite of steak, then having to spit out the remaining gristle). For $152 for a steak (split between 2 people), it was extremely disappointing. Also, the tables were way too close together (I had to move the table over to get out from the booth and I'm a very average sized female). Overall, most of the food was delicious especially the crab arroz, service was good, and ambience unique. But for the price, I probably wouldn't return.

Earl gave us great service but three plates were far below the standards of a world class steakhouse. The arroz cremoso was not edible, it was very oily and even as we pointed out this to Earl he was not able to do much to remediate the situation. We were celebrating Mother’s Day for my wife, and she couldn’t eat her rice. Went for a basque cheesecake for dessert which unfortunately was not good either. It was our first time at Asador and probably the last.
