First time trying out La Chaumiere and was encouraged by reviews of many dishes. The room is small and opens up right to the front door. Some sort of host station or table would definitely help those sitting right by the door to escape cold winds whenever there's a new arrival! That said the greeting was prompt and warm and we were immediately ushered to our reserved table. The menu is pretty classic French bistro - which is quite nice as neighborhood French bistros seem to be an endangered species these days. We shared a very good Caesar Salad - nice white anchovies! - followed by the seafood linquini - which was delightful - perfectly cooked shrimp, scallops, mussels in a light wine sauce - just a touch of tomato and parsley. Shared also the steak frites - suggest as we did to order the bordelaise sauce on the side as you get a lot - which was cooked medium rare as requested. The accompanying hand-cut frites were so good - more places need to go the extra mile in presenting this dish. Our server was charming and took good care of the entire room along with the owner. Our only negative was wishing the owners would complete the "makeover" by removing the neon "OPEN" sign in the front window and the enormous Video Screen the hangs high above the room taking up an entire wall by the ceiling - and decorate that wall like the rest of the dining room. A few live plants wouldn't hurt either! But those are small dings and easy to change. What's great is that there is a traditional French bistro on Divisadero with a kitchen that takes care to turn out each dish expertly and serve with kindness and professionalism. Will definitely return!

Our server was nice but not very attentive. We had to flag him to get a refill on our water. The steak of my friend was over cooked, well done instead of medium rare. They did replace the dish and gave us extra wine. My beurre blanc sauce was okay but why was there some sweetness to it?

We had a terrific experience dining in our new neighborhood French spot, which just started serving dinner. The night was cold and stormy, so soupe à l'oignon, roasted lamb shank (incredible), and a solid boeuf bourguignon were just the ticket. The wine pairing was lovely, and the service very friendly and unobtrusive. Can't wait to go back.

A return visit to Bistro La Chaumière for more cozy French bistro cooking on a cold autumn day ~ this time for the excellent Crevettes Provençales, Salade César (again), Bouillabaisse (best in San Francisco … by far!) and a perfectly cooked Confit de Canard. We will be back!

We grabbed dinner at La Chaumiere this week. We had eaten here before they changed the name and enjoyed the crepes at brunch. Every city needs a great French bistro that serves traditional comforting food like French Onion Soup, Duck Confit, and the dish I had Beef Bourguignon which is top-notch. On a cool fall evening, I could not think of a better meal to have. We will be back. This is the best French bistro in the city!

Bistro La Chaumière is promising to be new favorite for authentic French bistro cuisine ~ from a perfectly tangy Salade César and fragrant Soupe à l’Oignon to a generous serving of Moules Frites (served with hand cut fries), a rich Bouillabaisse and Steak au Poivre to an orange blossom scented Crème Caramel ~ our table enjoyed every dish from the new expanded menu. We have been regulars at La Sarrasine (Galettes Bretonnes are still on Bistro La Chaumière’s lunch menu), so excited for this interior refresh and menu expansion. The bistro ambience is cozy & service is always swift.

The crepes were good, which are what we went there for, but the fries and calamari were not. The fries were limp, soggy and greasy. They looked and tasted like frozen fries that were just warmed over: they never should have been served to us. The calamari on the other hand were crunchy and hard. Neither of these appetizers should have been on the menu.

Charming ambience but mediocre food. The galette was limp and flavorless and the fries were a bit soggy.
