Beneath the pulsing city lies a hidden dining destination. USDA Prime steaks from the finest Black Angus cattle. Bespoke cocktails. A restored Bank Vault from the 1930s. This is Butcher & Banker, a new "steakeasy" at the crossroads of Penn Station, Madison Square Garden, Javits Center and Hudson Yards.

Butcher & Banker is no ordinary steakhouse. A dozen different steaks are on offer, but non-steak eaters will dine exceedingly well here.

Butcher & Banker pays homage to the New Yorker Hotel’s storied history. The New Yorker opened in 1930 at the height of the Great Depression as the then largest hotel in the city. It has attracted a who’s who of entertainers and dignitaries from around the world, including Muhammad Ali, JFK, Joan Crawford and Nikola Tesla.

Beneath the hotel, a bank vault and offices were occupied by the Manufacturers Trust Company until 1980. With the opening of Butcher & Banker, the public can see the vault for the first time in 37 years.

                      The food and service were good, but the experience was awkward. The manager was in the dining area the majority of our visit, spending copious amounts of time with every table except ours. Unsure of the reasoning because he wasn’t shy about visiting every other table and having lengthy conversations, but only glanced at us when our food came and said “bon appetite.” It felt strange and we were glad to leave when our meal was done.

                      Food was very good and tasty. Portions were decent size and definitely filling However, the meal seemingly took painstakingly forever to be served due to the lack of service and accessibility Literally had to get up twice to ask for water. If you’re gonna try to be premium, then be premium all the way. Waitor was too busy hanging out at the bar with their friends.

                      Overall, it was very good. Oysters Rockefeller was a little on the cool side nice big Caesar salad. My wife had the seafood ravioli and was excellent. I had the New York strip asked for a chard medium rare came out charged medium well waiter said it’s very hard to get a medium rare when you charge it and walked away. The only reason it’s not five stars
