  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

This dowager French restaurant in the theater district has been serving tasty food at reasonable prices for years. We went for NYC restaurant week and had a tasty three course lunch. The only negative that I have for this place is the ambience. Dedicated to Josephine Baker, the walls are covered with classic posters and artwork of her as it has been forever. The ambience however could use an upgrade as it shows the wear and tear of years.

My husband and I had a very pleasant experience at this restaurant. We found the atmosphere cozy and romantic with some lovely live music. We had the price fix meal and found it to be the perfect amount. The service was good but felt it was a little slow towards the end ( after the pre theater crowd left). Overall, we enjoyed it and would go back. The pictures and history of Josephine Baker was wonderful and historic and really worth a visit. Please note ,if you are going the theater this is located on 42nd closer to 8th. It is a great spot for pre theater but give yourself enough time to get to the show.

This restaurant is delightful! It has a very historical Parisian atmosphere. The staff was very friendly and the food was outstanding. The pianist was great. We had the duck and shared a tarte tartin. All very yummy. We will be back.

We had the prix fixe and the service was really good. The selections very good. The amount of food was good. The steak was cooked properly. I’d have preferred a different cut. My guests liked the Skate and quail. A very pleasant pre-theatre meal. We went back for a post theatre drink too.

What a beautiful restaurant. I was completely enamored by the decor and the cozy feel of this place . The service and the food were outstanding. The woman playing the piano just made it all the more perfect setting for a night out with my daughter !
