  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Neighborhood gem
The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

Delicious, always authentic French cuisine. Our favorite restaurant when going to Signature Theater.

We were seated close to a very loud piano & vocalist. It was very overwhelming & we were thrilled when it stopped.

This place has food that is good but not excellent, so rates a 4 on food, BUT it gets 6 for ambience. The place has a very Parisian feel with great posters, murals, and decor, including white table clothes. It also has music 4 nights a week which is especially nice! And you can actually carry on a dinner conversation without straining to hear the others at your table. If you're into this sort of thing, I recommend it highly!

Chez Josephine is always a great dining experience — food is excellent and the menu has a large variety of dishes and prices — as well as a prix fixe lunch of excellent value. The service is excellent and the wait staff is very attentive. The ambience of paintings of Josephine Baker on the walls throughout the restaurant adds to the pleasure of dining at Chez Josephine!

lovely atomosphere, piano player and singer was nice background. The food was really not good. My friend got a shrimp cocktail which was inedible (how do you mess up shrimp cocktail?). They kindly took it off the bill. I got mussels that were ok- I liked the broth but a lot of the mussels were mushy and there were many I couldn't open. The fries were good.

Had an enjoyable pre-theater dinner. Dinner for two was a pork chop and halibut (fish if the day). Both were prepared well, portions adequate. Service was fine. Would definitely go back

I went here with friends for lunch and it was great. We all had the prix fixe (3 courses for the reasonable price of $30.) My friends said the steak was a bit tough but they were warned by the waiter that it would get that way if they ordered it well done. I had the sole, which was buttery and tasty. The service was super friendly. I have also been here for dinner and have loved it.

Absolutely delicious! Beet salad, steak frites and profiterole were wonderful, if very meager in size for the lunchtime prix-fixe meal. Understaffed today, but that didn't effect service. Very conscientious service.

My friends and I were all disappointed that the food was just so-so. We were expecting delicious food. The shrimp dish with Brussels sprouts had no flavor and the Trout almandine was just ordinary. The only standout dish was the carrot ginger soup.
