About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Innovative
  • Great for creative cocktails
Claro is where New York and Oaxaca meet – the result of chef/owner T.J. Steele’s long-time love for Oaxacan food and culture. Over his many years in Oaxaca, TJ cultivated relationships with local craftsmen, artists, mezcaleros, cooks and farmers throughout the region. Claro is dedicated to making everything by hand, including the masa, cheeses, chorizo and moles. TJ sources the corn for Claro's menu from farms that hand-pick non-GMO heirloom (criollo) varieties, all our meat and produce is organic and our menu is entirely gluten-free. “Claro” means “clear” in many different senses, but also “of course” -a phrase that’s used to put a person at ease; a sentiment that permeates the style of dining we hope to share with you. The soul of Claro extends beyond the menu, having called on Oaxacan friends to add their craft and expertise to all areas of the restaurant.

Amazing food & service. 100% GF and safe for people with celiac as the chef has it! Feels amazing to be able to eat such high end food with great service and atmosphere and not even have to think or worry about cross contamination!

I have lived in New York City most of my life and consider myself an open minded "foodie." I found this place immediately annoying and it lasted the whole meal. I am all for "cool" spots. young chefs and cool looking people delivering great food with ambience and charm. and while the food at Claro is really very good, the nearly completely indifference to our dining experience to say nothing of the lack of explanation of any dishes and no sense of timing relative to having items brought to the table turned me way off. Drinks were weak and the food while interesting was stupid over priced. wont return.

Unfriendly and rushed service. Sewer smell in the bathroom that drifted to our table all night. Quality of food didn't match the price point.

Great crowd and excellent food. General vibe was awesome. Places were high, with starters costing almost $30 Staff was very friendly, but forgetful. While waiting for a table to open up for our reservation, we hung at the bar in the back. Three different servers offered chips and guacamole while we waited and every time we said yes. But it wasn’t until the fourth time we were asked that they remembered and brought them to us For the next part, I want to point out that it was raining and so they had to move all of the outdoor patio reservations into the main dining room, which caused a severe delay in reservations. We were completely understanding and patiently waited for the table. We were finally seated an hour and 15 minutes after our reservation. Proceeded to have a great dinner, outside of a small error in our cocktail order. we were fairly surprised to see that we were charged for the chips and guacamole. As they have been offered to us as something to snack on while we waited, I think we all assumed that meant they would be complementary and then after waiting over an hour for our table, we thought it would’ve been the very least they could do to cop a few items on the menu for us. But we were charged full price for all items. We paid without complaint, but it definitely soured our feeling towards this venue.

A wonderful Oaxacan meal of a very delicious Cevixhe, a shrimp taco with a whole flash fried giant prawn, a delicious oyster “poor boy “ snadwuxh and ethereal dessert. Only concern is the volume was deafening.

Outstanding Oaxacan food. The smell of fresh masa cooking is evident as you enter. Thoughtful mezcal cocktails were excellent.
