Cooks & Soldiers brings the cuisine and cultural experience of Spain’s Basque region to the flourishing West Midtown area. The menu is divided into “pintxos tradicionales,” or tapas-like snacks served atop toasted bread; “pinxtos especiales,” or Basque-inspired small plates; “asador” including a variety of wood-grilled fish, meats and vegetables; and a selection of unique and modern desserts. Behind the bar, Cooks & Soldiers offers guests an extensive collection of Basque and Spanish wines, txakoli and ciders, in addition to craft beer and signature cocktails. The cocktail list places a heavy emphasis on gin, offering a seasonal selection of house-infused tonics blended into gin tonics and other popular libations.

I was there today for the first time, me being a native was a disappointment, the whole theme was wrong and I guess I was expecting something different, I will very happy to offer my services as a free consultant for next year to try to make it better and offer the people a true experience…

Cooks and Soldiers put on it's annual Tammbora celebration. This is the first time attending and I was not disappointed. We stayed from start to finish, enjoying small plates of everything regional in the Pays Basque. Drinks were varied and plentiful, from cocktails to wine and draft beer. The service was excellent, with used utensils regularly collected, the place was kept clean, while many of the servers entertained while dispensing beverages. The music was representative of the region celebrated, making it a grand occasion. I understand from one of the guests who recently celebrated a birthday there that, for a prix-fixe, you will have a similar experience, with many-course meal and beverage.

We thoroughly enjoyed the food but there were four of us seated in the very front room and it was extremely difficult to have conversation. It is very very noisy. It has a real upbeat vibe and the music was great but the acoustics in the front room with the glass are terrible. We thought the food was amazing and the duck and monkfish were two of the best dishes we have ever ever had. The mountain bread was phenomenal. Maybe they need to get some of those sound buffers for the ceiling in the front room and the ambience would not be quite as noisy.

As always the food was terrific. Great mix of flavors, often unusual sauces waiting in surprise under the main ingredient like the patatas bravas. The half chicken must be ordered 45 minutes in advance but so worth the wait; always moist, flavorful and succulent.

It's been years since we have eaten at Cooks and Soldiers but it was every bit as good as we remembered. Everything we ordered was outstanding and the cocktails were superb! We had the shrimp, sunchokes, mountain bread (what a treat!), the ribeye and broccoli. Great experience all around!

Mountain bread was out of this world! We enjoyed every plate we had including haricots verts, croquettas, patatas bravas, and pan de setas. Also enjoyed the Basque cheesecake and chocolate tart with passionfruit gel. Lots of creative spins on tapas dishes that we really enjoyed. Service was so kind and helpful too!
