Explore the intersections of Spanish and Japanese cuisine at Cranes, a restaurant and sake lounge by chef Pepe Moncayo. Chef Pepe’s contemporary dishes spotlight the similarities he has found with the ingredients, techniques and culinary viewpoints of Japan and Spain. From cooking style to ingredient and flavor combinations, his Spanish Kaiseki is a natural cultural and culinary marriage.

The design of the 12,000 square foot restaurant space includes a beautifully striking bar, large sake lounge, raised dining area, open kitchen, and private dining room suitable for 30 guests. The sleek, modern, yet approachable space draws on the chef’s Spanish and Japanese influences. Bright polished metals and thoughtfully placed wood elements layer amongst dark textures and dramatic lighting.

Used to love this place. When it opened it was creative and next level good. Service was slow. Food was good, but clearly the result of belt tightening.

Cranes does not disappoint! Extremely well prepared and beautifully presented, the tapas dishes were fresh and provided exotic flavor combos. The dishes tend to be fairly heavy despite the small plate size because many of the dishes are fried and my only wish is that there were more variety of veggies available.

The food is amazing. The service was indifferent, to the point of feeling that th diners were a nuisance to the process.

Cranes is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. The food and service are top notch. Highly recommend the unagi paella but I’ve never had a bad dish there. The lunch bento box is one of the best deals in the city.

We went on a Wednesday for their Pim, Pam, Pum dining event. We enjoyed trying many menu items and really loved the shishito peppers, tempura and patatas bravas! The restaurant is beautiful and service on point. Thank you!

Excellent restaurant, and a perfect place for guests and happy hour. The drink list is outstanding, and features a wide variety of sake by the glass. The chef is exceedingly talented and hospitable, and his team is attentive and knowledgeable. The other great thing is that you can get a full meal or share smaller plates designed to be shared. Highly recommended!

Food was good but recommend to ask what’s really on each dish as one showed up with fish eggs and well, gross. The service at the bar was “off” and very slow even when very quiet just before the dining room opened. However the waitress was fantastic and made up for the slow start.

Came here for a birthday celebration and opted for the pim pam pum experience. I’m used to being somewhat disappointed by DC dining, but this was a very pleasant surprise. The quality and variety of food was an absolute steal. Service was lovely. I will absolutely come back to try things a la carte or perhaps the omakase.

The food was amazing. Like amazing. We try somewhere new in dc for our anniversary and this was one of the best. The restaurant is too spacious for the kitchen so it seemed a little empty but the food made up for that times 10. We will be back and we will be bringing friends! Truly a special chef!
