About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
  • Good for groups
Welcome to Cunard Tavern, a neighborhood gastropub where East Boston’s shipbuilding past meets a bold, globally inspired menu. Owned by lifelong local Philip Frattaroli and led by James Beard Award-winning Chef Tony Messina, Cunard is known for elevated comfort food, creative cocktails, and rooftop views from The Layover—our seasonal sky-high roof deck patio and bar.

Steps from the East Boston Shipyard, Cunard honors the immigrants, tradespeople, and dreamers who once arrived at Cunard Wharf. Their stories shape our space and our spirit. Inside, you’ll find industrial touches, warm hospitality, and dishes that embody tradition and innovation.

From burgers and beer to grilled lobster and tropical drinks, Cunard is the perfect spot to gather, celebrate, and stay awhile. Whether you’re a longtime neighbor or just visiting, you’ll always be welcomed like family.

We have been wanting to try this restaurant for months. We finally got there tonight and were not disappointed. The chicken parm is amazing and large enough to feed the three of us. We also got the pasta and broccolini, which was very tasty and perfectly cooked. We also had dessert, which was like fritters with a unique miso apple butter. The waiter and all of the staff were very attentive and very friendly.

What a wonderful dinner! My partner and I are in the neighborhood and enjoyed Cunard Tavern already, but the menu has taken a meteoric leap forward with the new chef. We savored the citrus salad, char-broiled oysters (phenomenal - don't miss!), and were eyeballing the roasted cauliflower but the server had just tested the roasted acorn squash and was so over the moon about that we couldn't resist going for that one instead (they were sooo right). Delicious fare and definitely still in the zone of pub-friendly comfort food, but elevated and inventive! Just one example: Biscoff cookie crumbs as part of the carmamelizing on the squash :) Great wine list also. And all the staff we interacted with were so friendly and helpful. 12/10 - we'll absolutely be back!

Everything was over fried. Great cocktails though!

Solid spot for brunch in Jeffries Point! Our server was so gracious with us. Weirdly enough, there were not enough coffee mugs for the small amount of guests in the restaurant, but she promised to get us some as soon as they were clean! Honestly, the restaurant should buy a few more standard sized coffee mugs since we had smol teacup sized ones and there should be enough to accommodate a good brunch sized crowd! Also, weirdly enough there wasn't any drip coffee, aside from decaf available, so we ordered espresso beverages (perfect for the teacup mugs) and then the server let us know the kitchen was able to find more coffee to make and brought us some asap. Really appreciated her service!! But c'mon, a restaurant that offers brunch shouldn't run out of coffee!

Food was phenomenal. Drinks were also A+. Went with my parents who are in their 70s, and the background noise was a bit much for them. I wouldn’t have thought twice about it it it wasn’t for them. Great experience overall. Will definitely be back soon.

The reviews of Cunard really don’t do the place justice. I lived in East Boston for 3 years and I come to Cunard about 2-3 a month. It’s where the locals go when they don’t want to cook, meet up with a friend, or grab a drink after work. It’s a solid establishment. The people that work there are super friendly and kind - and I’ve never experienced anything negative here in terms of the service. The menu/branding recently changed and so far I’ve enjoyed the offerings - except I was a little sad to see the birria tacos taken off the menu. In the summertime Cunard is airy and open with massive windows, and small roof deck. My only complaint is that it is occasionally very loud and hard for conversations. I highly recommend a Sunday brunch here or Tuesday night trivia - it’s always a good time.

Our bartender was awesome and friendly, she only works Saturdays. Food and drinks were good as well. We sat at the bar because the stable seating for two is comfortable and crammed with little privacy.
