Chefs Dan Jacobs and Dan Van Rite announce Milwaukee’s sixth annual Dim Sum Give Some, the duo’s signature charitable event benefiting the Kennedy’s Disease Association that has become one of the city’s most popular food-driven fundraising initiatives. Affectionally referred to as the “Dans”––Jacobs and Van Rite behind the award-winning EsterEv and DanDan will join forces with 25+ chefs from across the country for a day of incredible culinary talent and charitable giving. Sponsored by OpenTable, Dim Sum Give Some 2025 will take place on Sunday, April 13th from 12-3pm CT at the Italian Community Center of Milwaukee (631 E Chicago St). Chef Dan Jacobs was diagnosed with Kennedy’s Disease in 2016, the same year he opened his first concept, Dandan. This rare neuromuscular disorder, similar to ALS, progressively weakens muscles, impacting movement, speech, swallowing, and fine motor skills. Despite these challenges, Jacobs remains a fierce advocate for chefs with disabilities while running two standout restaurants in Milwaukee; Jacobs and Van Rite earned their sixth James Beard Best Chef Midwest Semifinalist nod for their work at EsterEv this January. “Since my diagnosis, my mission as a chef and restaurateur has evolved into advocating for differently-abled people, particularly in the culinary industry, where physical challenges present significant obstacles,” says Jacobs. “It’s an honor to use our platform as a way to drive awareness and fund research for a cause so close to home.” With the unwavering support of the Milwaukee community, Dim Sum Give Some has raised over $100,000 for Kennedy’s Disease research since its inaugural year in 2017. This year’s event promises to be bigger than ever, with a record-breaking number of participating chefs and restaurants––some of which include Dan Jacobs’ fellow Top Chef contestants––from national destinations including, NYC, Houston, Chicago, Denver, Austin, New Orleans, and Durham, NC.

The service was excellent and our waiter answered all our questions and also gave good suggestions. We had the chicken pad thai and smashed cucumbers which were both very good. We will definitely be back to try more of their food options. Excellent ambiance.

We visited DanDan for the first time tonight for dinner and it did not disappoint! We ordered the fried rice, pork dumplings, crab rangoons, and kimchi pancakes, and everything was fantastic. The cocktails were great too. Service was friendly and quick, food came out quickly, and the ambience (decor + playlist) further elevated the experience. We even got to see Dan (Jacobs) right when we walked in, which was such a fun surprise (starstruck!). Will be returning in a month for my birthday to try more of the menu!

I always loved DanDan when I lived in Milwaukee. Now when my family meets up here we always make it a point to go. This winter my boyfriend and I have spent every other weekend in Milwaukee and we have been to DanDan for dinner several times. Why? The food is always amazing. No matter what we order, any appetizer, Mongolian Beef, or Happy Chicken it is always great. Everything on the menu is delicious! And the atmosphere is joyous! Always full of happy people. Great lighting, is that it? Not too dark and dreary? The other reason I would say is because of the consistently great service. Every server we have had at DanDan makes an effort to be friendly and make us feel welcome. Waiters smile and make eye contact. They must have happy bosses and it shows. So friendly! All of them. Last night we had a very tall waiter and he bent down to eye level to take our order. A few weeks before we had a very friendly waitress. All the people that bring out the bowls of food are professional and polite. I know it seems weird but eating out here for a whole winter of weekends I have noticed how many servers don't look at you, don’t smile, don't slow down to ask if need anything …the little touches that makes dining out a pleasant experience. I swear we are pretty normal people, no substituting gluten free dietary restrictions here! Happy pleasant not bothered humans. I do understand being on your feet all day is hard, coworkers and bosses can suck big time and customers can be major dicks. But a smile does go a long way. DanDan is doing something right, I just wish more restaurants would.

Cucumber and black vinegar salad was too salty—almost inedible Pancakes were delicious We sat with dirty plates in front of us for too long and we awkwardly asked to have them replaced. The Mongolian beef was tasty but was lukewarm. The shrimp fried rice was overly oily.

This was my 2nd visit. Quite disappointed with king pao chicken. There was about 4 small pieces of chicken in the whole dish. Small cup of rice. The last time we went we had enough food to share and went home with some. This time it wasn’t enough for even just me. Very pricey rangoons- very expensive drinks for a very small pour of wine. We were sat at 2 top and the waiters walking by hit my chair almost every time they walked by! Overall bad experience vs last fall when we went.
