I’ve been to Deans five times. It has all been very good. Christmas night we picked it for our choice of restaurant. The service is really great. Had onion soup and a shrimp cocktail. You can’t find any better two in the world. Our steaks were not so good. My strip had no flavor and my wife’s was burned but they did get her another steak. Overall it is a fine restaurant and the service and managers are great. Except for charging me $41 for a flute of champagne I can’t complain. Even Jefferies doesn’t charge that for a flute. We eat out five times a week and we probably will return. Austin is lucky to have such a restaurant. Most restaurants associated with a hotel is not so good but Dean’s Italian is the exception.

We were happy they were open for Christmas and never eaten there before so happy to try a new place. We were seated on time but the table we were sat at was in the middle of the isle and the chairs were extremely tight to sit in and we are not big people, so it was very uncomfortable. Good wine list but very pricey. We purchased the $200 Caymus and that took almost 20 minutes to arrive. So, we were at the table for over 20 minutes without drinks or ordering our main course. Fortunately, I ordered appetizers the moment we sat down. Our waitress was almost completely absent the whole time. Nobody ever refilled our water. Once the wine arrived there was no proper presentation, and they poured it into the same glasses we brought from the bar. Not a big deal but disappointing experience. Our main meal took a long time to arrives we were almost done with the bottle of wind by the time it arrived. I could tell it had been sitting there for a while as it was cooling down and a manager brought it as our waiter was never around to check on us. The food was good quality and if it was warmer, it would have been very good. One bright spot was a gentleman by the name of Simon. he cleared our table and was pleasant and attentive. it was he that checked on us the most and offered to box up our leftovers. I wish he had been our waiter. Overall if the service would have been better the whole experience would have been worth the $500 we spent.

This was our fourth visit to Dean's so obviously we think highly of the restaurant and chose it for our Christmas Dinner. The visit was very disappointing. To start with it took nearly 20 minutes to get our drink order (4 people) and did not even get an apology. The food courses were very slow and each time placed with the wrong person. We when asked for confirmation between two filets (barrel cut for one of us and standard cut for the other), we got an "I don't know". The lobster bisque was served without a spoon which required chasing down a waiter and it was barely warm with a piece of rubbery lobster. We ordered after dinner drinks and a dessert to share for the four of us. The drinks were more prompt but it was at least twenty minutes when we flagged our waiter down and told him to bring the bill and forget the dessert that we still did not have. He did comp the dessert and after-dinner drinks. For the reputation and price point of Dean's it was a very disappointing Christmas dinner.

I ordered a steak medium rare, it came out medium. I was going to wait until our server checked on us to see what we could do because maybe it was bad lighting. The server never came back until he gave us dessert menus at the end of our meal. I obviously finished the steak because it was delicious and I’ll never let a good piece of meat go to waste. But that experience left a bad taste in my mouth. Pun intended.

Overall it was a fine experience. Our server was visibly preoccupied with another table next to us. It didn’t feel like a special experience. We ordered the Dean's Style filet and Scallops. The filet was dry but the lobster was good. I enjoyed the scallops. We loved the millionaire potatoes and beet salad. Based on other fine dining experiences, we won’t be back.
