Overall we had an enjoyable experience at East End. When writing this review we felt the need to look at it through the lens of their pricing, as it’s one of the most expensive restaurants in town. Pros: + Entrees were delicious (Filet, Pheasant, Sea Bass, Steak au poivre (though this was a bit tough)) + Very attentive and accommodating service, from the entire staff (hostesses, waiter, the sommelier interaction was a pleasure) + Ambience, at least on the outside terrace was enjoyable. On the downside, the appetizers and desserts weren’t quite as good. The $20 Caesar salad in particular had hardly any flavor at all… Comparisons: We enjoyed this more than (the also very pricey) Herons in the Umstead. Herons felt like they were trying to be a high end NYC restaurant, but not being able to deliver the quality all around. East End does a better job of this in our opinion, though mainly with the entrees. Compared to a couple of one-star Michelin restaurants we went to on a recent Europe trip (one in Paris, one in Amalfi coast) we actually preferred East End versus Joel Robuchon in Paris. But our biggest question mark was the value for money category. It felt like everything was priced about $10 more than it deserved to be (on average). Overall, the dining experience does make us interested in coming back to try it again, but the pricing/value makes us hesitant to do so.

Food was very good. Servers were very attentive. Great wine selection. Only draw back would be the variety of menu options (if going for a second or third time).

This was our first visit, but we’ve been to other restaurants in the owner’s group many times. Service got off to a rough start. We were brought to our table only to find it hadn’t been cleared from the previous diners yet. We went back to the hostess stand and waited for table to be cleared. We were seated in a very tight semi-circular banquette. When the table was moved so we could sit, the table became unbalanced. It took several minutes for the table to be adjusted. Moving the table should not have caused it to become as unbalanced as it was. We got a complimentary pour of champagne for our troubles; unexpected and a nice touch. The restaurant has caviar service on the menu, so we asked about it. The server was new and had to ask, it took a long time for her to come back. She reviewed the rest of the menu, noting that the salads and sides were big enough to share. The wine manager noticed me looking at the list. I told him what we were getting for our main courses and what my price point was. He picked an excellent wine for us. After placing our order, the service slowed to a crawl. It was at least 45 minutes from the time we ordered until the caviar appeared at the table. That was cleared and the salad was served. The server was right, it was plenty for 2 of us. After clearing the salad, the main course also took a while to arrive. My wife’s filet was dry on top, as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while. But it was cooked properly to the requested medium rare. And the red wine au jus was outstanding. My shell steak au poivre was also cooked as requested, with the sauce served on the side. It was very good. We ordered dessert and coffee, which comes in a French press for 2. We were halfway through our dessert before the coffee was served. In all, it was a 3 hour meal. It was very good, but should not have taken nearly that long. Maybe it was an off night, but we’ll give it another chance. The foods that good.

Our first visit to East End Bistrot, exceeded our expectations. We ordered the Lobster soupe, A4 Wagyu, salad and Chilean Sea Bass. Everything was excellent, especially the sea bass. Thank you Addison, who served us at the bar, did an exception job! We will return soon!
