Originally opened in 2005, Garrett Harker’s flagship restaurant has reopened its doors just up Beacon St. only three blocks from its original location. Eastern Standard continues to offer seasonally focused New England interpretations of classic brasserie fare, including raw bar and charcuterie, nostalgic favorites like steak tartare, baked rigatoni, steak frites, and butterscotch bread pudding, and some new soon-to-be-instant-classic dishes. Cocktail legend Jackson Cannon has crafted a beverage menu that features an array of craft cocktails both new and classic, a curated selection of wines, and craft beers from near and far.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Acclaimed brasserie Eastern Standard is back and better than ever at the Bower complex. Snag a seat at the oyster shell-inspired bar or in the mahogany-decked dining room for longtime favorites like the baked rigatoni and roasted bone marrow, plus the same showstopping cocktails that earned the restaurant accolades from Esquire and Tales of the Cocktail.

We went on Christmas day therefore our choices were limited to the fixed menu. Although they gave some of the food French or gourmet sounding names- the pasta dishes were dry and fairly flavorless even though the servings were ample . The golden beet burrata was delicious as was the prime rib, but the lobster pasta had only 3 tiny bites of lobster in it . The bread brought before the meal was absolute perfection as was the creme brulee. The brownie with gingerbread ice cream was way too dark and rich to be served with such sweet ice cream although the portion was huge ! Our server was fantastic and kept our sodas full all night. The restaurant was beautiful and filled with a snazzy crowd- I felt like we could've done a chain restaurant for half the price and equal taste

Food was just OK, prices were reasonable. At first they wanted to seat us by the restrooms, that is really not so good, we ended up sitting by the entrance. This was a little bit better in my opinion but then servers never came by to refill water or check on us, that was really disappointing. It is also a shame that plates and silverware were dirty and stained. I think we really expected a lot from this place. We liked many things but there were details that made a special night more of a regular “standard” night.

We were seated next to the main door with cold air blowing into our face every 5 minutes. They should not be offering reservations for this seating.

ES presents itself as an upscale French restaurant. It is pricy. Te interior of the restaurant is pleasant. It is noisy enough that it's difficult having a conversation across the table. The food is bad. Three of us ordered the "plat du jour " for Saturdays - braised short ribs. The point of braising meat is so that it is TENDER when eaten. In our cases, we got three hockey pucks of beef that we could not slice with the table knifes provided. We borrowed another persons steak knife so we could saw through the beef. Chewing the beef was an Olympian task. None of us finished our short rib entrees. The chocolate cake for dessert was good but I assume it was from an outside bakery. Very disappointing experience.

Meh. Food was OK; cocktails were excellent. Service was spectacularly awful. We had a waitress introduce herself as our waitress—“I’ll be right back for your drink order”—and she never returned to our table. Another waitress picked up for her but appeared to spread the table to 4 others. Ordered a cheese plate; it was dropped off without explanation. Was asked if we wanted more crostini at one point: said yes, 20 minutes went by (I finally got up and asked someone else to please send it—along with our drink order). I could give many more examples but bottom line: we were a party of two—so, not a large group—and we struggled across 2.5 hours to get drinks, food and dessert (had to ask if there was a dessert menu, etc.). The restaurant was INSANELY hot (I stripped down to a tshirt and was still very, very warm) and loud. Such is life in a busy restaurant, but worth mentioning as overall—the basic food (salt cod fritters; dry rigatoni; cheese platter) and terrible service combined with the sweltering room makes us strongly avoid recommending it. Maybe just go to the bar for a drink and pick a better food/service spot nearby?
