This review makes me really sad! For the past 15 years, I have been eating at Filomena’s every time I am in Washington DC. The food has always been delicious and the service has been friendly and courteous. Taxes are experience there last night was anything about that. Our server was very curt from the moment he greeted us at our table, which was barely a greeting. My husband ordered an insalata di stagione and our long time favorite, ravioli alla matrimonia. We told our server that we would be sharing the dinner. 10 minutes later they delivered the insulata di fragole with strawberries and the ravioli, meatball dish at the same time with no sharing plates. We asked the server that delivered the food to bring us plates and that never happened. We realized that it was the wrong salad after my husband started eating it. We asked another server for plates and that never happened. Finally about 10 minutes into the meal our original server came by and we told him we had no plates to share our dinner and that it was the wrong salad. He asked someone to bring us plates and offered to bring the original salad, but my husband told him no since he was so far into the dinner. The ravioli was very tough, which was the first time that has ever happened to us there. It tasted as if it had not been cooked long enough or had dried out. Also, because everything was served at once and there were no serving plates, it got cold. It was definitely not the experience we were used to at Filomena‘s nor was the food or service quality we have had in the past. We were out of there within one hour, and it certainly did not make our date night as special as it should’ve been.

This is by far the best Italian food I’ve ever had! The flavors are unique, the ingredients incredibly fresh, and the homemade pasta is perfection. We ordered two full-size meals, a salad, and an appetizer—more than enough to feed our family of four. The portions are generous, but the quality is top-notch. Every bite was rich, authentic, and clearly made with care. If you love Italian cuisine, this place is a must-visit!

I understand why this place is popular and packed - and challenging to get a reservation for on short notice. The food was absolutely outstanding (truly some of the best Italian food ever) and the portion sizes were generous. The pasta was fresh, the sauces on our dishes were done to perfection - and the service was attentive, professional and generally marvelous. The decor was, to us, overwhelmingly overdone and distracting, and actually subtracted from the experience. They must have just finished decorating for Easter and there were baskets hanging from the ceiling with stuffed bunnies everywhere, garish purple lights that cast a weird and unappetizing haze over the restaurant, glittery decorations everywhere. That might have been kind of fun and kitschy but the extremely narrow aisles between tables (I felt bad for the wait staff having to navigate that!) contributed to a feeling of an almost claustrophobic-like atmosphere. Also, the noise level made conversation with my dining partner difficult. We both had to take our phones out to use the flashlight to read our menus - the pink/purple/fuschia Easter-themed lighting made it very hard to see the menus. We don't regret trying out this place - and truly, the food and service were as good as they come - but anyone looking for a relaxing dining experience where they can have intimate conversation without raising their voice to be heard may be a little disappointed.

Coming from the NJ/NY area and being of Italian heritage, I am a little picky about my Italian food. So spending a weekend in DC I decided to look for as authentic of an Italian restaurant as I could. Well, I found one. Filomena was outstanding. Old school, authentic but most importantly delicious. Wait staff was well trained, high quality and professional. Everything was homemade and authentic. Veal chop parmigiano was one of the best I’ve had. And the final chef’s kiss was the complimentary sambuca or amaretto after dinner. A touch of Italy for sure.

The restaurant has mediocre food and a terrible ambiance. There so many better Italian options in the city.
