About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Great for creative cocktails
On May 13, 1931, Giuseppe Cipriani opened Harry's Bar in Venice. Over the years, Harry's Bar has become the place where writers, painters, artists, aristocrats, kings, and queens would meet. Among them were: Barbara Hutton, Katherine Hepburn, Gary Cooper, Giancarlo Menotti, Peggy Guggenheim, Orson Welles, Frank Lloyd Wright, Joe DiMaggio, Truman Capote, and Ernest Hemingway. The keys to the success of this small bar were: service, freedom, and lack of imposition.

Throughout its 93-year history, Harry's Bar has witnessed the 20th century in Venice. Its importance was also recognized by the Italian Ministry of Cultural Heritage, which declared it a national reference point in 2001. No other public place in Italy had received the same award in the same century.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Harry's Bar in Venice is a famed institution, renowned for its "impeccable" food and service. While it boasts "amazing Martinis" and a "must-try Bellini," it is notably expensive. The vibrant atmosphere and historic charm offer a unique, albeit pricey, Venetian experience that's "well worth it" for a special occasion.

It is what it is...old fashioned and "stuck" in its ways. And so much the better for it. There are plenty of reviews that give 5 stars. and plenty that give 1 star. The latter is usually to do with value, and yes, for example, €49 for a bowl of (very good) soup is ridiculous. Yes, €10 for a 75cl sparkling water is too much. Yes, €10 per person for the bread brought unasked to the table is too much - but have to say, was very good bread and crostini. But to give 1 star because of the prices is also ridiculous because everyone knows that it is going to be priced this way. And there is no scrimping on portion sizes! I did have 2 "complaints", or rather comments as one is overly pedantic 1) I had very thinly sliced veal - I realise it is hard to cook but it was overdone. 2) This is very pernickety .. but if you hold yourself up to be above the rest, you need to pay attention to these small details. It was to do with the crumbs. The best establishments clear the crumbs when the plates are cleared after each course. This was just done at the end. Pedantic I know, but a 3* Michelin restaurant would do it (though I know this isn't a 3* restaurant).

Dîner au Harris Bar à Venise : très belle ambiance, cadre mythique, et ce charme unique où le temps semble suspendu. Une adresse où l’on revient toujours avec plaisir.

Nice environment to eat but the quality of the food was not worth the price. We had eaten at other restaurants in Rome, Tuscany, and Florence before heading to Venice that had better food and were a lot less pricey. Most meals are 40-50 Euros but they don’t tell you the meals are really for 2 or more people. We had so much pasta left over it could have served another 3-4 people. And the wine and mixed drink prices were through the roof.

Food was sandy/gritty and desert was stale. Service looked pretty but much ado about nothing.

Poor attitude of staff, poor service waiting an hour for a main and very poor value for money. 61 euros for a small chicken let and a few roast potatoes. No veg or sauce. There are much better places to spend almost 400 euros for three main meals and a couple of drinks each. Will definitely not return.

Harry’s Bar is a must stop in Venice. Just be prepared to pay for it. The food and service are impeccable. The drinks are small but mighty and expertly made. I’ll take a small Martini well made over a a large one done poorly. When we return to Venice one of our first stop will be Harry’s.

We booked a table for dinner but left without ordering. We paid for our 2 drinks (Gin & Tonic, Billni) 50 euros which for a small cramped bar with no atmosphere or view was expensive. Menu looked pricey. We decided to leave and try somewhere else. Staff were efficient and friendly
