It's A Southern Thing is our owner's personal love letter to The South. We've proudly served Downtown Durham since 2017 and are thrilled to expand and open up our second location here at Ellis Crossing. Known for our unique take on traditional Southern fair, we welcome you with a laid back atmosphere, Southern hospitality, delicious craft cocktails and thoughtfully created, scratch made dishes. From our best-selling Shrimp and Grits to Sweet Tea Brined Pork Chops, Fried Green Tomatoes, Collard Greens, Chicken and Waffle Skewers and everything in between, you will find familiar flavors presented in an original way. Offering brunch and dinner seven days a week, with extended bar hours and a private dining area for small functions, we invite you to come in, stay a while and let us show you why so many customers love being part of our It's A Southern Thing family.

    The food was amazing, the restaurant was quiet during lunch on a weekday, I will definitely return! The flapjacks charcuterie board, biscuits, and sausage gravy were delicious!

    The food was good. I did look over the menu before arriving and then again once I had been seated. It was not until I went to order that I found out that the drink menu had changed but wasn’t updated online and I was handed the wrong one when I was sat so the drink I wanted couldn’t be made. Aside from that, we had a great experience. Everything was good and our server was attentive.

    This was my first visit, but it won't be my last. Delicious food, attentive and helpful wait staff, and excellent value for your money. What's not to love???

    Good visit just not great. Would have liked a little more avocado on the iast because that’s essentially why I ordered it because of the Avocado but that’s my preference. Will come back to try another dish. The order of grits had too much cheese so next time will order grits without the cheese

    The automatic 15% gratuity on all bills impacts the customer service. When we sat down a party of four was given one drink menu but no food menus. In addition, I was charged a total of $23.00 for a margarita. When I asked about the price I was told the liquor was $19.50 and the margarita mix was $3.50. This was not explained when I ordered the drink. Unfortunately I will not be back, the food is an 7 out of 10 but the price gauging and bad customer service make it not appealing.
