Equal parts evil lair and Victorian cocktail salon, KINDRED has transfixed and beguiled
all who step into its portal, with whimsical eccentricity, world class vegan dishes, and ambitiously inventive cocktails.

Since opening its doors in late 2015 in the enchanting neighborhood of South Park, San
Diego, KINDRED has garnered recognition which transcends its plant-based credo,
heralded as one of the city's premier dining institutions. It has been named EATER San
Diego's and San Diego Magazine's Restaurant Of The Year, topped Zagat San Diego's
Most Important Restaurant Openings, and earned an Orchid Award for interior
design from the San Diego Architectural Foundation. KINDRED was also named within the Food Network's list of the best vegan restaurants in the country, was voted the Best Vegan Bar in the U.S. by VegNews magazine, and received regional honors from the Tales Of The Cocktail Foundation for Best Restaurant Bar in the West.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Kindred offers a unique dining experience with "phenomenal vegan food" and a "creative, ever-changing menu" that impresses both vegans and non-vegans alike. The atmosphere is "super cool" with a rock aesthetic, though it can get "very loud." Service is generally friendly, but can be slow during busy times.

The food was great, service was outstanding. You do not have to be a vegetarian to enjoy this restaurant.

The level of noise was such that conversations had to be at a yelling level. My Mind Melt sandwich was outstanding as were the caesar salads. However the crispy potatoes were greasy and the egg roll burger was falling apart and difficult to eat except with a knife and fork. Glad we went but probably will not go again.

Nice space that is big and open with a little bit of fun decor! The service was great and the food was amazing - that skewer platter was memorable. The only complaint at my table was that the gravy on the mashed potatoes and chicken dish was bland (and lacked salt). Otherwise, we were all in love with the rest of the dishes we ordered. One thing that could be changed about the space is the bathrooms. They're individual/private rooms, so it doesn't really make sense to gender them (I ended up going in the "men's" one because the "women's" one was occupied for a while). Overall, this was our best place to visit while traveling to San Diego, simply because the food was 10/10. Would definitely visit again.

Food was delicious! You don't realize you are not eating real meat and you don't miss it! The skewers are the best dish!

Food was amazing. Wait time was a lil longer than expected, took a while for us to order. But it was a busy night. I though the reservation would help curb that wait time, but didn’t really seem to help.

Came for lunch at 1:30pm on a Sunday. Was immediately told a 20% tip would be automatically included by the host and server because there were 6 of us. Shortly after that we were told they were out of a list of items on the menu including ice tea. Found that strange to be out of ice tea! Shortly after the mandatory tip and the list of foods they are out of we were also told the kitchen will be closing soon and if we needed to order anything we had to hurry up. Overall it was a very unpleasant dining experience. We never felt welcomed, in fact the opposite. The food is good, but the overall attitude of the staff makes it difficult to enjoy.

Came for brunch. The husband is not a fan of vegan/vegetarian food, but he had to admit it was good. The cocktails are delicious and the food was pretty good. We stuck with items that wouldn’t be plant based meat replacements and were pleased with our choices.
