About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
Come dine in this beautifully restored Uptown restaurant on Magazine Street and enjoy James Beard Award Winning Chef Justin Devillier's contemporary Louisiana Cuisine.

The La Petite Grocery name pays homage to the history of its home, a building that’s stood for more than a century. The original structure was built in the late 1800s and called the Central Tea, Coffee and Butter Depot. In 1908, a fire devastated the space and it was transformed into a full service grocery store. Later it was most notably a fine foods and butcher shop, VonderHaar’s Fine Foods until 1982. When La Petite Grocery opened in March of 2004, they similarly aspired to provide the neighborhood with exotic teas, locally roasted coffee, and fresh produce. By doing this, we hope to provide a dining experience that evokes nostalgia of old New Orleans. Reservations are preferred.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Joseph Tiedmann

From the OpenTable editors: Head to this charming restaurant inside a historic building for exceptional New Orleans staples from James Beard Award-winning chef Justin Devillier. That means you'll find some of the best blue crab beignets in town and a rich turtle bolognese with a soft-boiled egg, both of which pair well with classic cocktails like an old fashioned. Brunch is a highlight here, too—an order of the creamy buttermilk biscuits and gravy is the perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

This was a business dinner scheduled for 6:30pm. Hands down some of the worst service I have received at any restaurant. The maitre d in his cold unwelcoming way provides me an option of places to sit. Then proceeds to seat us exactly where I asked not to be seated. The waitress was even worse, you’d think they were press for time with how fast she was pushing us along. I ordered appetizers and a bottle of wine, hoping she would have picked up on the cues, we’re going to spend a good amount of money and we wanted to take our time… she blew right the signs and keep this same pace the rest of the night. Lastly she capped it off with flopping our bill on the table and saying something about dessert as she walks away, simply rude in every way. Of course we didn’t order dessert and only spent a third of what I was prepared to spend there. Service Matters and I’ll never step in this restaurant again.

Food was not quite as fantastic as the menu (and some reviews) suggested. Good, but not epic.

This was not our first visit to La Petite Grocery, and I knew to expect great things. We statcrted with the crab beignets and aioli and it was like going to heaven without dying. I don't think I've ever had such beautiful savory beignets. Because I didn't want to fill up at lunch, I only ordered the pork belly, which sounded very interesting, but proved to be just ok, but not great. It was served at room temperature, which took away from the toothsome fatty goodness, and I wasn't sure the pickled vegetables were a good match. I accidentally ate a rather large piece of ginger, obscured by sauce, which was unpleasant. My husband had the special green onion sausage sandwich, which he pronounced was "just ok," and ended up being a very large portion. The service was attentive enough, although I ran out of iced tea a few times, but someone refilled it after a few minutes. So, all in all, heavenly beignets were the highights, but the mains were a bit disappointing.

The beef tartare was perfect, followed by a well-made tasty Gulf shrimp and grits entré!

We did Friday lunch and did mostly shared plates. The food was amazing, as expected, and we enjoyed every thing we ordered. The service was unfortunately not stellar. It took nearly 20 minutes for drinks, and the food just as long. Our server was very polite & apologetic, but when the food comes out before drinks - it’s not a great experience.

I can’t say enough good things about this restaurant. The food was delicious! Those crab beignets are incredible! We had the rabbit and the turtle bolognese and both were absolutely delectable. The service was warm and steady, perfectly timed. I wish I could eat here every day!

Yet more confirmation and evidence of why New Orleans is one of America’s best food cities! The blue crab beignets are out of sight, as is the rabbit for the main course. Unpretentious, simple, lovely ambience in the Garden District neighborhood. Will return.

Great food, horrible, forgetful, snarky service. Between the bartender and the server probably some of the worst service we’ve ever had, especially for a restaurant of this caliber where we’ve dined several times
