About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Hot spot
  • Great for creative cocktails
Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

Enjoyed Animae much BETTER. The duck confit was not crispy on the outside and tasted the vinegar immensely.

Came in for Mother’s Day, had their special & unfortunately was very disappointed. Not usually one to complain but the the crudo was extremely fishy and I had to send it back, the server was nice and offered us a salad, however I don’t know how I feel about charred lettuce… kinda weird but but edible so we had that. The main dish, Maine lobster tail was extremely overcooked but at that point I didn’t have the heart to send that back too and starving so we just did our best to eat it. I think our server could tell we weren’t the happiest but he never sent over a manager or tried to make anything better. Kind of sad because I was really looking forward to that dinner all day. On the upside, drinks & desert were really good, and the restaurant is beautiful. I would personally consider this a “for drinks & pics” kind restaurant.

We were visiting La Jolla for my 50th birthday trip and booked this the night before. We were blown away! Everything was excellent - the food, service and ambience. We shared the baguette with chicken skin butter, and each had a steak plus frites and a side. Everything was delicious and cooked to perfection! They even brought out a dessert with a candle for me, which was so sweet! We loved it so much that we went back the next night to have drinks at the bar. We both said how much we wish we lived in San Diego and could go more often!

Space is great, staff too. Great selection of wines by the glass. The Wednesday's only table side chicken flambé is not to be missed!

I’m a huge fan of Chef Monsod, and couldn’t wait to try this place. We decided to go for my birthday and everything from the service, ambience, drinks and food was perfection. One thing that really stood out to me were the sauces on each plate- hats off to the saucier/magician. I especially liked the calamansi beurre blanc on the snapper dish 🤤 Definitely coming back soon 🫶
