About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Hot spot
  • Great for creative cocktails
Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

For our main courses, we ordered the Steak Frites and the Denver Steak accompanied by creamy potato purée. Both dishes were nothing short of delicious. The Steak Frites was perfectly cooked, tender, and flavorful, while the Denver Steak was juicy and satisfying, complemented beautifully by the rich, creamy purée that added a luxurious touch to the meal. A highlight of our dining experience was the baguette served with house-made jam and butter. It's a must-try! The warm, crusty baguette paired with the sweet jam and rich butter created a delightful start to our meal. Overall, Le Coq offers not just fantastic food but also a welcoming atmosphere and attentive service. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a memorable dining experience. Don’t miss out on their baguette—it’s a perfect way to kick off your meal!

This place oozes swag. From the neck scarves to the patterns and textures from floor to ceiling, the vibe is dialed in. Food and drinks are damn good. Real expensive but damn good. The three course chicken dinner on wednesdays rules (the sauce over the chicken is absurdly tasty). All hail chef Tara.

From the moment we stepped into Le Coq, we knew we were in for a treat. The appetizer was ready as soon as we arrived, setting the tone for a flawless meal. Our server Sergio went above and beyond, offering thoughtful suggestions from cocktails to entrees to sides. Every recommendation was spot-on, enhancing our dining experience. The food was absolutely divine—authentic French cuisine at its finest. The flavors were rich, and the quality was unmatched. The ambiance was warm and inviting, adding to the overall charm of the restaurant. Five stars all the way—exceptional food, service, ambiance, and quality. Highly recommend!

Food was bland and lacked a big flavor profile. I found a very sharp piece of bone in my tuna that cut the inside of my cheek. The only thing here that wowed me was how good the bread was. I would not recommend. If you have a choice, go to their sister restaurant Animae, which is amazing!
