Esquire | Best New Restaurants 2023

Phoenix New Times | Best Thai Restaurant 2023/2024

Lom Wong celebrates the diverse people and cultures of Thailand by cooking the types of food that one would find in villages and small towns across the different regions of the country. Additionally, we tell the stories of the amazing people who honored us teaching us their recipes. Our goal is to show another side of the cuisines of Thailand by being true to ingredients, techniques, and flavors. We hand-pound our curry paste, hand-squeeze coconut milk, and are sincere to the flavors Thailand. Additionally, we offer a fantastic natural wine list and cocktails that showcase unique Thai ingredients.

Lom Wong is run by Yotaka and Alex Martin.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Thailand-born Yotaka Martin and her husband Alex showcase hyper-regional flavors of Yotaka's home country at this modern restaurant that was named a 2023 Best New Restaurant by Esquire. Named 2025 semifinalists for the James Beard Award for Best Chef: Southwest, the Martins shy away from Americanized dishes like pad Thai, instead serving dishes like boo pad pong garee (stir-fried crab in a turmeric-rich curry) and naem khao tawt (crispy rice with cured pork sausage). Natural wines and tropical cocktails round out the transportive experience.

Experiences

  • Arai Kodai

    Multiple dates available
“Arai Kodai” roughly translates to “I’m down for whatever” and pays homage to the roots of our concept where we would host multi-course dinner parties in our living room without telling people what the menu would be. It’s a wonderful opportunity to explore the cuisines of Thailand with us. These days we are able to customize the experience a bit, so if there is a dish you know you must have, or are allergic to something, we can cater to your party so you have the best possible experience! For parties of 5 and above, a large party gratuity of 22% will be added to the bill.

It’s hard for me to not get tacos at Hurachis (so good) when I’m in Phoenix for work, but I took a risk and I’m so glad I did. The food was fresh and flavorful and beautifully prepared, just like meals I’ve had in Thailand. My cocktail was revelatory. The ambiance was classy and comfortable. And the staff was lovely ~ super informative and up for making suggestions. I’ll be back!

Lom Wong’s is often mentioned in the same breath as Phoenix icons like Valentine and Bacanora, but after dining here, I’d say—like Bacanora—it might be a bit overrated. The ambiance is definitely a strong point. The space has a cool, curated vibe with both indoor and outdoor seating. However, parking is a hassle, so plan to arrive at least 15 minutes before your reservation. Lom Wong’s menu is focused on regional Thai cuisine, which is a refreshing take. Don’t expect your usual green curry, pad Thai, or drunken noodles here. Instead, the menu offers lesser-known dishes from different parts of Thailand, which I appreciated in theory. I went with the ARAI KODAI experience—this isn’t a tasting menu, but the server crafts a multi-course meal based on your dietary needs and spice preferences. Unfortunately, the service was slow, and the dishes were hit or miss. Drinks were creative and beautifully presented (we tried the Jap Gob and Thunder’s Piña Colada), but ultimately neither of them hit the mark flavor-wise. We were recommended 2 appetizers and 2 mains for two people. Here's what we had: Thai-style chicken wings: Cooked well but the flavor was too mild. Mango salad: Tasted more like raw mango with subtle seasoning; underwhelming overall. Bamee Mu Dang (egg noodles with char siu): Good portion size, noodles were solid, but the char siu lacked depth and they oddly didn’t provide a knife to cut the pork. Boo Pad Pong Garee (stir-fried crab with rice): This was the standout dish of the night. Flavorful, balanced, and satisfying — I wish the rest of the meal had been on this level. Overall, Lom Wong’s excels in concept and ambiance but falls short on flavor and consistency. If you’re looking for a standout Thai experience in Phoenix, I’d recommend Glai Baan instead. It delivers more in terms of taste and overall satisfaction.

Came here with my wife after reading about the restaurant online. Overall impressed by the food. One dish Tom Yum Haeng Sen Yai (stir fried seafood noodles) came up short. We tried dessert too, the hibiscus creme brulee was excellent while the lemongrass flavored one was not to our liking. Service was very attentive, however while clearing the dishes some sauce was spilled onto my shirt. Mistakes happen and these two things weren't a huge detractor.

Fantastic meal, one of the best we’ve had this year. The family style service worked well, things came out quickly and service was great as they came around 2-3 times to check on us. Crab curry dish stole the show, but again everything was fantastic. Definitely coming back to try dishes we didn’t this time around.

What a wonderful evening! Our server worked with the kitchen to customize a menu for our entire group. And we’re not special - they offer this for every guest, and it greatly elevated the dining into a full learning experience. The service was as phenomenal as the cuisine. Mixology program is on-point. We’ll be back!
