About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.

Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Phila Lorn

From the OpenTable editors: A lively noodle house that prides itself on having “no rules,” Mawn is the brainchild of husband-and-wife duo and restaurant vets Phila and Rachel Lorn and was named one of the toughest reservations in town by the Philadelphia Inquirer. At the cozy, bustling restaurant, first-generation Cambodian American chef Phila puts his personal spin on traditional Southeast Asian dishes like khao soi and Thai crab fried rice—spins that have earned him a 2025 James Beard Award semifinalist nod for Emerging Chef.

I’ve been to this restaurant four times now, and each visit has been better than the last. The food is consistently outstanding — full of flavor, beautifully presented, and clearly made with care. The ambience is just perfect, whether you’re going for a casual night out or a special occasion. The staff is warm and attentive, and the overall experience always feels effortless and enjoyable. It’s rare to find a place that keeps impressing you like this. Highly recommend — already looking forward to my next visit!

We had a nice meal. While good, this spot did not live up to its hype for me. Reservations are nearly impossible to score, going out on the first of the previous month. I was lucky and got a 7:15 on the first Friday of the month. We were seated right away. This spot is BYOB which is a positive. Based on the way you are supposed to dine, I’m not the biggest fan of the atmosphere. The tables are small, making it difficult to have multiple dishes on at one time. It’s small and intimate, which I loved, but the music is loud making it difficult to hear conversation. It’s silly to gripe about, but the napkins are paper, which for the eating experience, we either needed more or I would have preferred cloth. We had to wipe down our table a few times, which meant less napkins too. I want to say the food is good. It’s not my favorite, and I think a lot of the hype comes from people trying this cuisine for the first time. I appreciate that it’s something different in the restaurant scene. We did the puck and see, which meant they picked the dishes for us. Appetizers we had were the wild boar dip, which was too salty for my taste, grilled saht koh, which was tender but overpowered with ginger, and then my favorite, the burmese ginger & melon salad. The salad was fresh and crisp and a good palate cleanser for the salty dip. For the mains, we had the all star seafood rice, and the khao soi. The seafood rice was good, though for the price I would not order it on its own. I love fried rice, so I expected to love this dish (which I did) but nothing stuck out enough to me to make it worth over $50. The Khao soj was creamy and had good flavor. Finally we ended with a funnel cake, which was not the best. It was overwhelmingly sweet, and so soft it just was like a lump of dough in your mouth. Service was fine and our server was kind. Overall do I think this was worth the price? No. Would I return? Absolutely not if I have to predict my schedule a month in advance. If a friend asked

Brilliant. Totally worth the hype. Put yourself in the servers hands… they will add more than just the puck and see but it is all worth trying and not super expensive for a James Beard award nominee

Amazing from start to finish! Every dish was fresh and full of flavor. Portions are definitely meant to be shared but it's OK to have one all to yourself, too!
