Chef Johnny Curiel debuts Mezcaleria Alma in Denver’s LoHi neighborhood, bringing the dynamic spirit of Mexico City to life with CDMX-inspired small plates and an expansive Mexican spirits menu. Located beside Curiel’s first solo restaurant, Alma Fonda Fina, Mezcaleria Alma marks the natural next chapter in Curiel’s culinary journey to share the beauty of Mexico through food. Each dish and drink draws from Curiel’s experiences in one of the world’s most renowned culinary capitals—a city where culture and tradition merge with global inspiration and constant innovation.

While Alma Fonda Fina is a love letter to the home-cooked traditions of Chef Curiel’s childhood—the comfort food found at traditional fondas across Mexico—Mezcaleria Alma embodies the unbridled innovation that defines CDMX.

Every corner of the dining room reveals treasures from Johnny’s travels, paired with captivating art like intricate Mexican embroidery that sparks conversation. At the heart of the space is a captivating mural on traditional bark paper by local Latinx artist Maria Morante, a powerful homage to Mexican folk art.

So good. Went with enough people that we could try the whole menu. The only rival is Alma Fonda Fina, in my opinion. So many incredible dishes.

All I can say is wow! We will be back. We sat at the Chef’s counter and were treated by chef Jordan Tehrani. He was extremely friendly and eager to wait on us and answered any questions we had about the menu. We ordered the Ceviche De Kanpachi (one of our favorite dishes of the night). The Hawaiian Kanpachi eaten with the spoon accompanied by the fennel and celery broth was a culinary adventure. The buttery texture of the fish and the crunch of the garnish was superb. Burrata Con Huitlacoche was a must as well! It is served with Bakery Four’s toasted sourdough and is the perfect dish to share. The green tomatoes were firm and delicious with the candied petitas and succotash. Loved this dish! The Carne Apache (Mexican style steak tartar) was the third dish we shared and it was delicious. From the crunch of the cracker to the manzanilla olives, this dish was perfectly salty and so good. Lastly we tried the Tres Leche cake which is not on the menu. Drizzled in honey, generous dollop of cream, combination of berries on top of the soaked cake - this was absolutely melt in your mouth. Highly recommend leaving room for dessert. We loved our dining experience and look forward to trying more dishes in this quaint, intimate atmosphere. 5 stars!

Top 5 meals of my life! Highly recommend sitting at the chef's counter and letting them select a progression of dishes for you. Incredible value for the food quality in a non pretentious but elevated dining experience. A friend and I visited Mezcaleria Alma after booking a same day reservation. I've traveled to Mexico City and looked forward to experiencing something similar to their vibrant dining scene. We chose to reserve seats at the "chefs counter". This is esentially a bar-like setting but in addition to being served drinks, the "tenders" are also your chefs for the evening. Instead of picking individual selections from the menu we asked our Server/Host/Bartender/Chef in-one to provide a progressive tasting menu of sorts and it couldn't have exceeded our expectations more. Will return without a doubt, I selfishly hope this place remains a hidden gem.
