   Monzu is to. die. for!! So freaking good, I might have to stop in multiple times while in San Diego for 2 weeks. The homemade pasta is perfectly put together and cooked to have a slight bite and chewiness that is out of this world. And their signature dish is nothing short of mind-blowing. Do not miss this stop!

   Ambiance is nice. Dined on a Sunday night; I thought the staff were attentive at first, taking good care to repeat our orders - though the food came out longer than expected (50 min wait), being reassured 30 mins in that the pasta was just cooking and it wouldn’t be much longer. Well my wife’s dish came out wrong, not what she ordered (she ordered the amatriciana and the pistachio pesto with shrimp came out) With the time that we waited on the entree, just told them that we’d eat it. Food was good but the experience was soured by it. The bill came up with the pistachio pesto, just paid it since they were getting more guests and online orders and probably didn’t have the patience to resolve it. Maybe you will fare better.

   The food was all wonderful and the staff were very attentive. Alfonzo our waiter was wonderful and we all had a great time. The Europeans in our group said it was some of the best pasta they had had outside of Italy. We were there with a large group and there was another large group, so it got a little loud, but I think that was mostly just the number of people. Will absolutely be back, if I lived nearby it would become a favorite.

   We had to sit outside which we understood because it was going to be a busy night for them, but the tables were so squished tightly together that it was hard to get in and out of them, and it felt like we were having dinner with our neighbors. I was really looking forward to the food because of the reviews I had read but was disappointed in my dish which was the Roman Carbonara. All the carbonara I have ever had was just made with egg yolks which resulted in a silky sauce that clung onto the pasta. This one was some egg yolk sauce which resulted in a sauce that was really salty and pasty which did not leave a good mouth feel at all. Also, about half of the guanciale was too tough to chew so I ended up just picking out all the pieces and placed them to the side. Our waiter did not correctly convey that my dish would be different that what I had asked to confirm it is what I wanted. The woman bussing the dishes kept coming to our table to try to clear our bread plates away when we were still trying to eat our focaccia, then tried to take our plates away before we were done eating our main course. My companion said that her ravioli was delicious . However , the focaccia was cold, hard and dry, which was very very disappointing because the reviews I had read said that it was good. I guess we got the stale one from yesterday as we were the second table with diners at 5:00 right when they opened. Overall, it was a disappointing meal and put a bit of a damper o my companion’s birthday celebration. Sadly, I would not return again.

   Only negative was having to wait for a table about 15 minutes after reservation time. The rest of the dining experience was outstanding from the service to the food and finishing with desert. Will definitely be in my top three whenever I am in town.

   Monzu is like a little place you would find on a side street in Rome. There are only a few tables, the menu is pasta. It was delicious, and Antonio took wonderful care of us. Arancini with marinara is a must try app to split. We had the short rib ravioli and the bolognese. Both delicious. Glad we chose Monzu. It’s in the gas lamp…easy walk from convention center hotels.
