Amidst the smart shops in this corner of historic York is the location for Mr P's Curious Tavern, AKA Andrew Pern's quirky 80-cover venture at 71 Low Petergate, which offers something for everyone: small, larger and sharing plates using produce from Yorkshire and from further afield to taste along with a glass (or two) of something different and ambience by the barrel load, to sate your curiosity and appetite.
Mr P's Menu encourages you to pick and mix from our offer of fresh shellfish and seafood, locally shot Game, cured meats and tasty cheeses to put together your own meal as your appetite, humour and curiosity allow. For a robust meal, we have more substantial offerings and for liquid refreshment, Mr P's offers small, medium and large vessels of wine, spirits and other beverages, some fortified, all fantastic. The ladies who like to lunch are more than catered for - fizz by the glass or a generous selection of gins available in our Gin Parlour overlooking the street below

Not bad, but not brilliant either. Can no longer just pop in for a drink. Prefer the Star Inn the City or the Star Inn the Harbour. Or the Star Inn Harome.

Great neighborhood restaurant with excellent well prepared food. Good and inexpensive wine list from the owner’s private stock.

Excellent food I think they might have been short staffed the night we went as service was slow and the staff seemed a bit fraught/tense

Third visit. As always delicious food and drinks particularly the gin menu! Service excellent. Can’t fault anything that’s why we keep coming back.

Booked as Star in the City was closed and pleasantly surprised. The place is a bit quirky and the menu has just been revamped to make it easier to follow. We had chicken wings and crab as starters both of which were very good, followed by Hake. Whilst £20 sounds expensive it was a big bit of fish and really tasty. We closed with a cheese board between us which was great. Nice wine and overall great service - would return.

The room upstairs felt out of the way with limited decoration and ambience, the menu was limited especially for vegetarian choices. And the food was bland & uninspiring, the curried chips and mayo were good, experience generally ordinary and over priced for what it was. The staff however were friendly.

I ws so looking forward to visiting Mr P's having checked the menu (I have allergies so needed to know there was a choice of things I could have). The decor also looked fun! When we arrived however we were presented with an unrecognisable menu and overheard another waiter tell their diners 1st Feb was a new menu, the first time it had been changed and was therefore reduced as the chef got used to it. There was 1 thing on the whole menu I could eat. Never mind let's move on - my husband and I were out for my birthday and I didn't want to make a fuss. When it did arrive the food was delicious but my goodness so so overpriced!! I don't know where Mr P's is trying to pitch itself but I will not be going back. They have a 'small plates' section to use as a tapas collection where most of the dishes are over £10. They recommend you have 3 or 4! My goodness so expensive. Finally ambience. It was bloomin' freezing. I mean ridiculously cold to the point it really impacted our enjoyment - and we were sitting away from the door. The couples near the door were eating with their coats on! Come on Mr P, if you're charging the earth don't scrimp on the heating and install a door closer! One lady got very upset when for the 5th time customers came in and left the door to swing shut but it just stopped halfway back letting in the bitterly cold wind. I do not recommend this restaurant. Spend your well earned cash somewhere better value for money with more choice and heating!
