Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Jason Peel

From the OpenTable editors: Chef Jason Peel is known nationally as the former executive chef for Roy’s Waikiki and beloved locally as a cooking instructor at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific. He opened his own restaurant Nami Kaze in 2022, quickly scoring a couple of James Beard Award nominations for izakaya-style small plates, both hot and cold, that star ingredients from favorite local farmers and fishermen. Be sure to try the hamachi rolls, plus the honey walnut shrimp stacked on waffles at brunch.

Some menu items were outstanding (Lobster BLT Salad, Glory Bay Salmon, Matcha Basque Cheesecake). Some menu items were unremarkable in taste, and therefore absolutely not worth the price the restaurant charges (Hapa Cattle Co. Short Rib, California maki). The ambiance was great, our server was nice, but probably won't return for a while unless I need to.

We had a truly fine meal at Nami Kaze. We had an assortment of dishes, all excellent and some frankly brilliant. The ulu tots were fun and tasty, the day boat scallops with asparagus perfectly done, the crunchy eggplant roll really good (and crunchy). Dessert was a deconstructed lemon meringue pie and banana bread, both top notch. Service was very prompt and informative from a friendly and helpful person. The mocktails were quite imaginative and good. All in all we really enjoyed the dinner!

The move to the prix fixe lunch has taken this place off my list. $45 for things I don’t want. Not happening. I’m sure it’s about reducing overhead because of how extensive their menu was but I’m out. I might try again for dinner someday but my fave lunch date with my husband is no more. I’m so disappointed.

Wow! This place just gets better each time we dine here. The execution of the menu is on point. The cocktails are great too. Staff is friendly and efficient and the service flow is well paced. I just wish the lights weren’t so bright… it feels like you’re eating in a big grocery store. That feeling does go away after the second glass of their Bushido sake tho.

I love the food here! This has been my go to spot to take out of town visitors. The staff is amazing. I am not a fan if the menu change to a prix fixe for lunch/brunch. It made it very difficult for me as a gluten free diner-my choices were very limited. I enjoy the variety of the dinner menu and the ability to share plates. I still love this restaurant but will only return for the dinner menu.

The change to set menu and no option for their previously extensive menu was horrible. Basically not the same great restaurant it used to be. Won’t be going back.

Verdict: $200 for two people and no alcohol did not get us great food, service, or atmosphere. Everything was ok, good here and there. We had a shrimp sushi roll, cabbage salad, and roasted eggplant for starters. Eggplant came after the other two which wasn’t what the waiter said would happen. Sushi was the best thing, even better than our entrees. Friend had kanpachi and said it was ok and I had the lobster pasta. It was too strongly flavored. Portion sizes for everything was just adequate but leaning small. Waiter asked about dessert before entrees came. And there was an occasional fly flying around.

Always love having date night here! Always new things on the menu with a focus on locality. Service is always top notch. Shout out to Kiko for making an amazing sake recommendation!
