Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Jason Peel

From the OpenTable editors: Chef Jason Peel is known nationally as the former executive chef for Roy’s Waikiki and beloved locally as a cooking instructor at the Culinary Institute of the Pacific. He opened his own restaurant Nami Kaze in 2022, quickly scoring a couple of James Beard Award nominations for izakaya-style small plates, both hot and cold, that star ingredients from favorite local farmers and fishermen. Be sure to try the hamachi rolls, plus the honey walnut shrimp stacked on waffles at brunch.

Delicious and inventive. Right on the pier where fish come in, so, everything super fresh. And I love a chance to watch a kitchen in action, so I am glad we sat at the counter.

My wife and I have been to Nami Kaze three previous times and always generally pleased with the food and selection. On our most recent visit for lunch, they have changed their service to prix fixe. Though there were several options for the starter and entree and only a fixed choice for dessert (it was cake - something we would never order), we would have preferred an ala carte menu. As such, we would probably go there in the future for dinner only as an ala carte menu is available. We also noticed that the restaurant was not as busy as on our previous experiences since patrons may have felt the same way we did.

Delicious meal at Nami Kaze! Great choices with something for everyone on the menu. Our group enjoyed sharing several of the appetizers. The preparation was gorgeous and the flavors were fabulous. The service was excellent - friendly, prompt, and great recommendations for what to order.

The change to a pre fixe menu was a surprise and I no longer think the value is there. Food was good but not sure I would typically spend $120 on a networking lunch.

Had a poor experience with our server who did not treat us well. The food was okay but it wasn’t good enough to warrant coming back for that kind of service. He literally told my 80 year old grandfather “I guess you weren’t listening” when he asked for the sorbet flavors a second time. He was very inattentive and subtly rude the whole night. Both my grandparents, parents, and myself were off-put by the server and do not plan to return.

To start. Staff is very friendly. With that said, food was okay at best. Limited to price fix items. Food took awhile to be served. Dinning area is loud.

Seated at the counter, I was able to watch the busy staff prepare food while enjoying a nice glass of wine. The wait help was attentive and quick to help me make my selection of appetizers: the Grilled Octopus and Ulu fries, both of which were delicious and which arrived promptly. I selected the Basque cheesecake as a sweet finish and found the juxtaposition of flavors and textures of matcha, sweet red beans and cream cheese on the crust to be a perfect finish to a light meal.
