Located in San Francisco’s Design District, Niku Steakhouse is a meat-focused restaurant, highlighting an in-house dry aging program, exclusive cuts of coveted Japanese A5 wagyu with an emphasis on wood fired cooking.

Niku, by the Omakase Restaurant Group, hosts a dining room oriented around a roaring custom binchotan charcoal and wood-fired grill, where guests watch as Executive Chef Dustin Falcon (Lazy Bear, The French Laundry) and his team prepare steaks to perfection. At Niku, there is a true marriage of American and Japanese sensibilities. Falcon’s cooking is driven by the terroir of Northern California — which finds its way onto the menu through foraged ingredients and products from local farmers — met with the highest quality domestic and A5 Japanese Beef.

From the OpenTable editors: Packed since it opened its gilded door in 2019, this swanky steakhouse is the spot for prime Japanese and American Wagyu, dry-aged at the next-door butchery. Grab a seat at the 18-seat chef’s counter to watch Dustin Falcon (of Lazy Bear and French Laundry fame) throw down the tomahawk steaks and crispy pig ears that helped the one-of-a-kind restaurant earn one MICHELIN Star.

I took my wife for her birthday and it was an amazing experience. The level of detail that they put into all that they do is awesome to witness. The short rib was cooked to perfection, and don’t get me started on their potato's; out of this world! The service was exceptional. I gave them specific dietary restrictions that my wife had and they tended to that with such care. I will be back for the tomahawk in the near future.

Exceptional. Be aware, this is not the typical American steakhouse overwhelming with massive quantities. It is elegant, curated, ultra premium experience. The Wagyu tasting menu is a great tour or A3, A4, and A5 samples. If A5 is too buttery for you, really must try the A4. Ask for what they may have off the menu as well! The sides and starters are divine. The rolls, potatoes, and that night, the seasonal pastas were exceptional. Let them pick the wine to pair with your meat du jour. The Butcher is the shop next door that is a must visit! Guy, who runs it, was magnificent to meet and see his curious eclectic collection of memories and meats. DO NOT skip the Wagyu fat brownie dessert. Trust us. Bravo. Can’t wait to go back.

One of the best dinner experiences I ever had. Sat at the chefs counter and had great conversation about wagu. A must for meat geeks! Service was second to none. From the time we opened the door until we left, someone was always checking on us, filling our water glasses and making sure that we were comfortable. We will go back, probably not for the wagu tasting since we now know what we like, but the tomahawk may be my next choice.

Such a great restaurant. Service was impeccable and people are very respectful. Food was extraordinary, everything was good. My favorite was the A5 filet which tasted and melted like butter. Truly a great experience, I highly recommend.

One of best meals ever and best in SF. Some might consider it expensive but prices reasonable and you get what you pay for. Perfectly prepared meals, grest service, awesome wine and cocktails. High-end dining that is not overdone and not overpriced. Will definitely go back next time I am in town.
