About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Romantic
A favorite of Julia Child - Pot au Feu Bistro is so much more than a restaurant... Established in 1972, our cozy Bistro is the oldest French Bistro in America. Pot au Feu Bistro kicked off the Providence Restaurant Renaissance being the first to offer something other than “steak, spaghetti and chow mien”.
Located in the Historic Downtown we are just minutes from all the hotels and convention center.

We have been coming here for many years. The food is always amazing, and the atmosphere is quiet and romantic. The owner never fails to come over and talk to us. Some of the best dishes and one of the most unique dining experiences in the Providence area. We recently traveled to Paris, and while we had a number of excellent fine dining adventures there, the cassoulet and the beef Bourguignon at Pot au Feu still remains the best that we have had. We come here maybe once every month or two, and it is one of the few places where we can say that we have never had a bad experience.

We had a wonderful experience. We were there to celebrate both mine and my husband’s birthdays. Walking through the door the aroma was delicious. We were greeted as we arrived and immediately escorted to our table. Our server was very pleasant. We started with the French Martini which was very good. The entire meal was delicious. Bob Burke the owner who we recognized from watching the Rhode Show graciously came over to our table to greet us. He took a picture for us as we blew out the candles on our dessert. Before leaving he kindly took a picture with us. This especially made my husbands day! Thank you Bob and staff for your hospitality and making this a very special evening for us.

The Pot Au Feu continues to deliver fine dining with excellent service, ambience and wonderful French Cuisine. I highly recommend this French Bistro for a very relaxing and enjoyable evening of dining. Personal attention by Owner, Bob Burke and his staff will not disappoint. Bon Appetite! Reservation to return to a prior favorite place where we hadn’t dined in over 10 years because of a truly bad experience for us and 5 guests. We should’ve stuck with that. Post pandemic, restaurant is split into little cells for privacy but some of the areas are like a closet, which is where host started to seat us. I asked for table in the main dining room. The food was good. But too fast. The crusty bread which I ate enough of back in the day to remember its texture and taste has changed. It is heated, in a covered basket but was no longer the “special bread”. The orders came out extremely quickly, likely to flip the tables faster and we felt much of the food had been pre-prepared. They still make a fuss about asking if you want “blue cheese on your salad”, which is lettuce only and never tell there is an upcharge for the cheese - guessing now more than the 25¢ pp it used to be. When the ice cold crème brûlée arrived and we fully expected there to be a candle since our opentable reservation said it was a “special anniversary celebration”, there was nothing. To top it all off a friend had paid for the meals in advance as a surprise by credit card and the host did not recall that, remember it, or make it mention of it when we ate, but called us at home an hour later to let us know that they had completely botched that and wanted to take care of it by canceling our costs and using the Gift provider’s card instead, which we declined. They offered the same in a gift certificate, we declined. The friend had called twice, am/pm to be sure the dinner was going to be paid for by them. Again we’re never going back. Too many misses. To see the attitude of the host, read his disclaimer and positions about diners and expectations on his website. Skip this one.

We went here looking for some french style dishes and were not disappointed! Very small, intimate restaurant with a small bar, in the city close to plenty of available parking garages., We were greeted by the owner, who' has been there since opening 1972 - inspired by Julia Child. We had a Pate Trio and some difficult to find Escargot for appetizers - Coquilles St. Jacques et Crevettes Lorraine (shrimp and scallops) and Pot au Feu aux Fruits de Mer for main courses, both came with a Warm French Bread & Creamery Butter and Salade Verte - then Creme Brulee and Pot de Choolat for desert. We would not hesitate to go back again!

Classic French Bistro atmosphere and entrees. French onion soup is a must, the duck was a hit, and the beef crepes are a favorite too. Wonderful cocktails, professional staff.. great night out!

My husband and I planned a trip to Providence and I researched restaurants and we decided on Pot au Feu as we love French food. I had been to Pot au Feu many years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Unfortunately this time, the restaurant just did not meet our expectations for a high end restaurant. To begin with the drinks seemed a bit weak and/or too much ice (Manhattan and Old Fashioned). We requested bread when we ordered our drinks, but our waitress seemed to forget until we asked a second time when our appetizers arrived. We enjoyed our appetizers (escargot, French onion soup and a mushroom soup.. although I was a little under-whelmed with the mushroom soup). Our salads (basic) arrived along with 2 glass containers of 2 different dressings. Our waitress left without explaining what the 2 dressings were (one was a balsamic and one was a dijonaise). As for entrees, my husband had a boulibaisse and noted the octopus or squid was fishy tasting and too chewy to eat as were any of the other ingredients. I had the crepes with beef and mushrooms. The beef was tasteless and chewy and not enjoyable. . We did not have desert or coffee. Overall, our dining experience was a very expensive mistake.
