The Raleigh Room is the perfect mix of old world and new, a re-imagined social space that nods to the traditions of our grand historic hotel. We've melded modern style and Southern gentility into a new interpretation of the Grand Salon. Relax with a coffee in the morning, or enjoy a traditional afternoon tea reservation on Fridays-Sundays from 1pm-3pm. Meet for proper cocktails in the evening when the salon transforms into the social heart of the hotel with live entertainment nightly. With its classic, yet contemporary decor, the Raleigh Room is the quintessential Southern lounge reinvented for guests who embrace the good life. Surrounding the Raleigh Room, our verandas provide an intimate retreat that overlook our stunning estate. Garden-style furnishings, lanterns and rolling planters bring the hotel's gardens indoors as a verdant frame for the Raleigh Room. To make reservations for Afternoon Tea, book on Raleigh Room’s OpenTable.

Review summary

AI-generated from verified diner reviews
Raleigh Room offers a charming afternoon tea experience with "gorgeous" ambiance and live music. Guests appreciate the "lovely" atmosphere and attentive service. While some found the food and tea temperature lacking, many enjoyed the overall experience. Reservations are recommended, and smaller groups may have a more seamless experience due to staffing challenges.

I am not sure if the tea service has changed. We used to get one pot of hot water per person and this time we got one pot for 3 people. We left it open when we needed a refill and was never given a refill. It took over 30 minutes to get one mimosa and the house Gin drink. Neither came with any sort of garnish? For $12-$17 a drink it seemed odd? We had a vegan member in our party, by the time we had almost finished the tea tower of snacks, the vegan member was just barely placing her order for her food. I think the room is beautiful, I think the food and teas are always wonderful. I’ve been a bunch of times of the years and have always appreciated the accommodations made for the dietary needs in our group. I just was surprised at the service. With that said our waiter was very nice and polite. It just didn’t seem as busy as it has in the past even with the holidays so it just kinda put us off with the timing and wait and changes to the service.

We’d never done their holiday tea before. It was more expensive than their normal tea, for about the same experience. It was lovely as always but very crowded to the point that there was confusion about seating arrangements.

Kira was a splendid hostess esp with too many children opening the external doors to let the heat out; their parents did not seem to mind. This is a nice way to spend an hour in the run up to Xmas but if you are old and hard of hearing (we are both :-)), being close to the live music is not an easy experience. Attentive service with a smile and and nice combination of flavours and texture for the tea, sandwiches and savouries. Looking forward to next year’s.

The good: Ambiance was lovely, of course. Waitstaff was very attentive and very polite. Even when talking amongst themselves, I heard guests referred to as Mr. & Mrs. Jones instead of table 7. There was even a cellist and violinist playing throughout the day. The not so good: We had a reservation for three adults for Thanksgiving dinner in the Crystal Ballroom. When I made the reservation in October, my credit card was immediately charged $339. When we arrived, we were seated at a tiny table between two doors where everyone had to come and go through to get to where the buffet was located across the hall. We ordered two cocktails and a glass of wine which overpriced, but okay - for a separate fee. Even soft drinks were not included with your meal. The buffet itself was typical Thanksgiving food, but not much of anything else. The plates provided were not dinner plates, but were salad plate sized, meaning you couldn't get your turkey, mashed potatoes and green beans on one plate. You had to make many trips back and forth if you wanted to taste everything. Of course by this time, everything on your dish was cold. We then ordered a bottle of pino grigio. I pointed out to staff that the sliced meats and cheese table was quite depleted, but instead of cleaning up the leftovers, tidying it up, and refilling everything, they brought out a little more cheese that was so dried up it was curling up around the edges and the original mess was left there. The dessert table consisted of about five or six choices, including dried out pumpkin tarts, apple tarts, cake pops, watery vanilla “mousse” and some tiny squares of unimpressive pastries - nothing chocolate. When we got the bill for the wine and cocktails, there was a $20 “service fee” tacked on. Conclusion: If you’re there for a lovely atmosphere and don't have your hopes up for much of anything else, you’ll be happy. If you expect a delicious, hot meal in addition for your $113 per person, you'll be sorely disappointed.

Lovely Afternoon Tea experience as always. We enjoyed ourselves very much indeed. Wonderful service by Rose who was attentive, detail oriented, proffesional, and a pure joy to meet. She was very sweet to record a short video of my friend & myself in place of photos. There's no Afternoon Tea experience in Virginia Beach quite like the Afternoon Tea at the Cavalier. Unmatched in ambience, service and the food offered.

We made a reservation for an afternoon tea in the Raleigh room. I had received a call the day before to confirm, which I confirmed with her that we would be there. When we showed up the woman working said that she did not see a reservation and that she would ask her manager. Her manager was actually the one that had called me to confirm on the phone. Then the woman came back and told me that I had made a reservation for the wrong place. After I showed her my OpenTable reservation, she then told her other manager that the first manager forgot about us. we sat at 1:15 and saw all of our tea items sitting about 20 feet away from us for 45 minutes until they were brought to us. The server was trying very hard, but it just seemed very mismanaged.

I am a vegetarian and the amount of money you guys charge there should be more vegetarian sandwiches to offer than your cucumber sandwiches. I mean this is just absolutely ridiculous. This happens every single time I am there.
