   Our first time at Ruta. Loved everything about it. Had the shrimp tacos. Really flavorful. My partner had the pineapple salsa shrimp entree. Delicious. Can’t wait to try it again when the back deck opens. It looked beautiful through the window at our table.

   I normally wouldn't leave Ft. Greene for a restaurant, but this Mexican place had dairy free/gluten free (assuming you can have pure corn). Ruta Oaxaca really decorated so fabulous for Valentine's Day. They printed the specials menu on paper with hearts. This graphic designer appreciates these extras. Then they had a special pink mescal drink for the day and an alcohol-free Corona. There were other alcohol-free drinks on the menu but they were sold out. Sweet, but not cloying so (unless you eat the candy decoration they put in it). They put together a special Valentine's day menu. I had the chicken breast sitting in sauce made of delicious black beans, corn and Mexican black mole sauce. I love black mole so I was in heaven. My wife had verde chicken enchiladas and was equally pleased. We had tea and then got a box for the leftovers. We'll definitely be back. Ruta Oaxaca, please put a chicken & mole dish with cheese optional on the regular menu!

   The chips and salsa were TOO good. The margaritas were nice, some very interesting. I lived in Oaxaca for two summers and was looking forward to authentic chicken mole. I was somewhat disappointed: the flavor was excellent but, unlike in Oaxaca, the chicken was cooked separately and the sauce added when the dish was served. The chicken was overcooked and did not have an infusion of mole flavor. My dinner companions enjoyed their enchiladas and tacos. I tasted and did not find them to be as good as in Mexico. We ordered flan and tres leches. Both were too sweet for my taste. The flan was coffee flavored and was missing the slightly bitter bite of caramelized sugar.

   The service was great, and the drinks were strong. Not the tastiest, but they did the job. The guac seemed old. Not great. Chips good. The vegetable enchiladas were TERRIBLE. Like, inedible. They had a syrupy sweetness that was just awful. I don’t know what ingredient made it like that, but I feel queasy just remembering the flavor. My friend got something with chorizo and thought it was fine, nothing amazing. I was excited to try a New Mexican place, but this one is a no go from me.

   We had such a fantastic meal here! The food was flavorful and fresh, great drinks that weren’t from a mix, and excellent service. Will return!
