About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Great for brunch
  • Lively
The menu follows a Southern-fried meat-and-three concept, meaning diners order a meat, plus three sides. Those will include Ruthie’s mac and cheese, of course, but also white-soy-braised greens, stewed chickpeas and smoked cauliflower with a spicy soy glaze. “We’re going to be changing it a lot based on seasonality,” Hill says of the menu. “ Every vegetable has got to be fantastic because it has to stand on its own.” One thing that will help that: Hill is already growing all of the restaurant’s own herbs at his South Arlington community garden plot.

First timers. Referred by a co-worker and read about it in top 50 restaurants in the DMV- this was one of them! Make a reservation! We went to Sunday brunch on Mother’s Day. It is unassuming from the outside (parking is limited in front so look into the apartment lot next door. It is so spacious once inside and has outdoor seating as well. The proprietor has a vision of farm kitchen dishes (like the actual plates) and mom’s sunny kitchen. Food was outstanding! Had the Ruthie’s big plate, sausage and biscuits, and sides (lots of sides)! All of them amazing. Seems like the teas and chai latte are very much from India-inspired recipes as they have ginger (taste like soap to me). But other than the drinks that my palette didn’t like - that is no reason to not try anything there. Cornbread is delightful with butter for days. The hushpuppies were good but not a lot of shrimp as they say but the hot of the jalapeños is nice if you like that. The deviled eggs are awesome! For dessert we had the campfire cookies and scoop of ice cream. They are 3 big cookies stacked and the ice cream has another cookie smashed in- if you like chocolate chips cookies then this is for you. Also had the butterscotch pudding -that was okay - had heath bar crumbled on it. It is a bit loud because your tables are right on top of each other and all the conversations. Would go here again on a non brunch day to try all the other food they must have.

Our dinner party was delighted to find two seafood additions to the regular RAD menu: pan seared scallops and a fried cod sandwich. In addition, off-menu specials included a very tender and flavorful beef tri tip entree and freshly harvested snap peas as a side dish. The list of go-to dishes just keeps expanding!

Took my wife there for a Mother’s Day outing. My order arrived but hers never did. Told by two employees that it would be there any minute, We were disgusted and left. Her meal never arrived. The restaurant wasn’t even crowded. Instead we got Chinese takeout. Thank you Ruthie’s for such a memorable Mother’s Day.

Even though we live in DC, this is our go to for weekend brunch (if we can get a table.) We love the food, it’s a great relaxed, but high service atmosphere-the only hard part is that we can never choose which of the delicious items to order.

Excellent birthday lunch with a friend consisting of a delicious soft shell crab sandwich special and pulled pork platter. Noise level was high but, otherwise, another satisfying meal at Ruthie's. Thank you!

We ate outside on their beautiful patio and experienced their consistently wonderful service and delicious food. A new item on the menu is scallops that were cooked perfectly and set in a pea puree speckled with amazingly fresh snap peas. As a bonus the large portions allowed us to save some for a delicious next day lunch.
