We had Sunday brunch at Scalo two weeks in a row. It was much better the first time (Dec 29) than on Jan 5. There were differences in the food; some were minor, all were worse on the second Sunday. A major problem was with the pasta carbonara, with home-made pasta, which should have been terrific, but was clumped together in thick globs. Something definitely was done wrong.

The restaurant is in a nice location in the Nob Hill area of Albuquerque. We were seated at a window table adjacent to the open kitchen complete with a pizza oven. Our waitress was very pleasant but seemed to lack training in service at this restaurant. The drinks ordered were promptly served and my mixed drink “ the Honeybadger” was a bourbon based drink but contained no bourbon. The meal order was placed shortly thereafter and despite a sparsely populated restaurant at 5:30pm, took almost an hour to arrive. The two pasta dishes were tasty and portion generous. During the meal, there was aloud flash which came from the kitchen. For the next 45 or so minutes the restaurant was filled with smoke, which the kitchen exhaust did not fully address. Ultimately the manager opened a door to the outside to expel the smoke. The menu had many dishes on it as well as an extensive mixed drink menu. The affogato we order to complete the evening arrived without the espresso. There seemed to be to be a thin staff which was not well coordinated. I hope we just caught them on bad weeknight.

Where do I begin? The experience deserves two stars only because of the efforts of two of the assistant servers who tried to salvage an unbelievably poor experience. Otherwise, the night was surreal. We were seated for our New Years dinner at 7:15, as expected. We did order wine and our dinner timely. Then things went off the rails. A language barrier with our server caused him to bring us the wrong wine. Then, an hour later, our entrees, which we sent back, arrived without having seen our appetizer, soup or salad. We had not seen our server for over an hour when we finally received our first two courses. Our first attempt to talk to a manager was unsuccessful. The other three tables in our upstairs room were not as patient, and walked out. The manager did finally arrive with our entrees over two hours into our meal. He did agree to a negotiated discount on our bill, and the food was fine. Having read other recent reviews now, we are afraid for Scalo as they try yet again to regain the glory days of a quarter century ago. It looks like another rebuilding job is necessary.

Started with manager, cutting off, hostess by speaking over her, he was kind of rude... but I know he was stressed because people weren't doing their jobs... but no excuse ..went for New Year's Eve. Had limited menu.... first item arrived within two minutes, drinks were quick..., took another 40 minutes for salad, and another 40 minutes for our main dish to arrive which my lobster tail was chewy ... we had to send the other main dish back three times because first it was cold, then undercooked ... finally delicious. The couple next to us said their tiramisu was still frozen.. knowing everything was taking so long, I ordered our dessert to go, which took another 20 minutes to get .. and the portions on my cheesecake were hilarious, the tiramisu literally was 2" x 2" x 2", it was ginormous.. piece of cheesecake was a very small two bite sliver .... about 1 inch high, 1/4 inch wide and maybe 2 1/2 inches long... not the best evening for them I'm sure!!

We truly enjoyed our New Year's Eve dinner at Scalo. All the courses were excellent, and the filet could not have been grilled better. It just melted into my mouth! Our server and all the staff really worked to make our dinner at Scalo top notch. So friendly and accommodating!

I was informed that my order would take 25 minutes. Starting with a salad this didn't seem too long. Unfortunately our entrees didn't come until one and a half hours later. I'd ordered a glazed pork chop and it came drowning in brown gravy. Not wanting a heavy meal at this time, I boxed for later. A very disappointing evening.

This was our 3rd Time Dining at Scalo. Once again, a five star experience from beginning to end. Hospitality, ambience, quality of menu selections, service and quality of meals was exceptional. Will repeat again and again at Scalo.
