    MICHELIN 1 Star

    2022

From the OpenTable editors: Chef Andrew Zimmerman's seasonal American tasting menu is so good that this West Loop favorite has consistently held on to a MICHELIN Star since first getting one in 2011. You'll get to choose from several options in your four-course dinner, which might include dishes like crispy ricotta gnudi, roasted monkfish with little neck clams, and a sweet pea pavlova with meyer lemon sorbet. You'll definitely want to get the wine pairing—Sepia won Wine Spectator's 2022 Best of Award of Excellence. Eating here feels extra-special because it's housed in an 1890 print shop with Art Nouveau floors and exposed-brick walls.

The sommelier was informative and an overall delight…as was his wine selections. The 4 courses were served with pride…as they should, as this was a top culinary experience for me and for my partner. Outstanding and memorable.

Phenomenal! The caviar with shiro dashi supplemental course was a perfect balance of briny, salty, and umami. The wife and I made sure to order different dishes for each course to try a total of 8 dishes. The highlights of the other courses were the smoked beef carpaccio, ocean trout, and the grilled short rib. The white sesame mont blanc for desert capped off a great meal! Reasonably priced for four courses. We’ll definitely be back.

Amazing time, wonderful experience that was bettered only by the food. The staff was highly attentive and knowledgeable, the ambiance perfectly balanced, and overall was one of the best dining experiences I’ve had in a long while.

Overall disappointing with the food being the highlight of our visit. Top ingredients were adequately prepared and presented imaginably. However, I was missing some flair in the preparations and more intense flavors. We had all the vegetarian options (thank you Sepia for including those) and perhaps the chef lacks the desire or skill to make these dishes shine. Unfortunately, we never felt comfortable in the restaurant. It was way too noisy and too busy to have a relaxing dinner. Service that evening fell short for us. Too many servers buzzing around bringing dishes speedily but with minimal explanations and everybody seemed to be in a constant rush. I also did not appreciate to be addressed with "you guys". Sadly, this was not the experience we expected from a 1-star Michelin restaurant. Would not return.

Food was just outstanding and our waitress (Tangy) was absolutely outstanding! My wife and I visit many Michelin Star restaurants. Sepia ranks up there with the best of them!

Unfortunately, the whole experience was underwhelming, mostly because a couple of the entrée courses were just not very good and for the price you pay, you really are hoping for it to be extra extraordinary. The smoked trout was quite fishy, I like roe but it did not pair well with the short rib at all and ruined the dish for a couple of us at the table and our dessert had such an overpowering flavor of butterscotch that it was practically in edible. Our server was really wonderful at the beginning, and we never, really even complained about the food, but towards the end of our meal, she just seemed to be annoyed with us and completely changed her attitude, which left us really feeling that we chose the wrong restaurant for our big night out in Chicago. Like I said before, sadly our visit was very underwhelming and I can’t say I’d recommend Sepia to others.

Amazing dinner to celebrate the birthday of a friend, we were four guests. We got in, someone greets us with warmth hospitality, they offered to check our coats, then we get to our table and Sepia had printed a menu with a special Happy Birthday printed on it! Alex, the server, was so professional, hospitable and authentic: we felt like he was one of the owners! We ordered cocktails that were amazing, even the simple classic Gin and Tonic! The menu was a four courses with 4 or 5 choices per courses. We added an extra course by adding Caviar… OMG totally the best decision we could take! Every meals that followed, and I mean it, were a Heavenly delicacy. It was the first time for everyone of us going to a Michelin restaurant and we understood why it has such a rating… Worth to mention, we had gluten and soy allergy and all the guests were treated with such professionalism, it was very reassuring. The quality of every aliments was outstanding: all guests were feeling absolutely great after the dinner and the next day… definitely a blast and a must to go to once visiting Chicago. Thank you Sepia for offering such a wonderful experience!
